    Rarely do I say that *nobody* would be that stupid/ignorant
    but I’m willing to say it now.

    Have you opened one of the posts? The contents don’t even
    reach the level of gibberish. There’s rarely even a word and
    certainly never a phrase that would fool even the least tech
    savvy reader into clicking a link.

    I figure they're more in the line of SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
    with the mass of posts attempting to influence search results for
    many of the terms in the posts.

    Since my reader doesn't handle UTF-8, the posts are effectivly
    random data to me.

    so even if godaddy suspended the web site, the spam bots

    It's been bombing comp.lang.c, comp.lang.c++, comp.arch for a couple
    of months now. Google finally made all three read-only, and that
    has pretty much eliminated the spam posts there. There are many other
    groups that are also affected.

    I'm going to set up a filter on my newsreader for lines that start with "=?UTF". That should handle a lot of it.

    Just did. Had about 450 unread messages, now I'm down to 9.

    If the groups are set to read-only wouldn't that eliminate 100% of new posts, basically turning the groups into archives?

    If the asshat has a goal of shutting down certain (or eventually all) usenet groups, then making the groups read-only means that the asshat has won.
