    ARTHUR - HEY! Here's what you're dealing with - 'ANGLE of incidence = ANGLE of reflection' one of the basic photography rules (look in a mirror - now move to one side & watch your image move with you - in the opposite direction of course...
    Here's the simplest solution -
    Get a piece of white cardboard or foam core at the craft store large enough to cover the entire engine.
    Place the cardboard (bounce card) on the underside of the hood - white side facing down.
    Place your shoplight at an angle that centers its output on the white bounce card - move it up or down until the reflected light illuminates the engine. Block (scrim) off any light that is coming from the actual light source & hitting your camera/phone
    directly.
    You'll get a nice even light without harsh specular highlights.
