Onosato has won 6 sansho prizes in his first 4
basho in makuuchi (two each kanto-sho,gino-sho,
and shukun-sho).
Now awarded another kanto-sho and gino-sho.
In his fifth,he has won his first 9 bouts, and
seems likely to keep this streak going (and possibly
to bring it to the most honorable end, promotion to
the ineligble-for-sansho rank of ozeki).
Does anyone know the longest streak of sansho
wins,or largest number of every-basho sansho wins
during one's eligibility?
Apparently 5 is the record...which he will tie...
As to ozeki promotion, the issue would be forced
by a yusho, and made likely if he wins most of his
remaining six bouts. His hardest opponents lie ahead
(starting with Kirishima who is closest in the yusho
race).Having a 9-win basho in his 3-basho run is
historically a negative influence on ozeki promotion
but the other two (his first is a 12) exceeding it
by enough can overcome this.
...he has now reached 12-1 this basho and any more
wins should seal promotion.
The wheels are in motion.
If he does...how many have become ozeki before ever
having a make-koshi basho?...and how long could he
stave off kadoban?
If he makes it to yokozuna before ever going make-koshi
I believe that would be a first since complete records
began.
A few apparently only had sandanme make-koshi
which Onosato never had to bother with as a
makushita tsukedashi but I doubt he's at risk
from sandanme wrestlers...
