I just looked at the Wikipedia page for Terunofuji and there's something
quite amusing there. It says that he and Ichinojo moved from Mongolia to
Japan at the same time and entered the same high school. Later, when
they had turned professional, Itchy actually made sanyaku (11/2014) two
basho before Teruno did (3/2015). Teruno is quoted as saying "What
matters is who will make it to the ozeki rank first." Two basho after
that (7/2015), Terunofuji was ozeki — and we know now that Ichinojo will never reach that rank.

I'm always fascinated by how relatively small the pool is of recruits. As
you say, it's surprising how long many of the fighters have known
eachother - a group coming in together from Mongolia (such as Teru/Ichy,
or Hakuho and others), or kids from high school or even earlier.

It's time for Teruno to retire. What a career! Meteoric rise to Ozeki,
crash to Jonidan 48, then back to Makuuchi: Ozeki again after only five
    basho and then Yokozuna after two more. In the 18 basho since he became Yokozuna, he had to withdraw from five and was absent from five more;
BUT of the eight he completed, he has six yusho! I'd say he has nothing
more to prove. He's coming up on 33 years of age and his battered body
isn't going to miraculously re-generate itself. Go now, Teruno, whilst
    you're at the top!

Do you think a new yokozuna is ready to emerge?

Unless Hoshoryu finishes very strongly we will have
no yokozuna active for the first time in decades.

Well, actually they promoted him on the strength of
a playoff win to avoid a no-yokozuna period.
