    Mattingly as a left-handed thrower was not a legitimate second baseman during the Pine Tar Game, any more than Ron Guidry was a legitimate center fielder. Billy Martin stunt-substituted them in those positions specifically as a way to protest the upheld
    protest by the Royals. So pointing to Mattingly in an attempt to legitimize the argument for the viability of left-handed throwing middle infielders playing at the major league level falls somewhat short of the mark.
