In Alaska people very regularly carry large caliber handguns for
exactly this purpose - bears don't give you a second chance, idiot.

I didn't say that having a gun to protect yourself against bears in the
wild might not be sensible, dumbass... but that is not what the article

They weren't in the open air being chased by a bear.
They were safely in a house. They could probably have scared her off by
banging a couple of pots and pans. In fact they could have avoided the
problem altogether if they had simply followed local advice.
