    Increase of ATP500 tournaments?

This year there will be 16. Just noticed it.

I am not sure if 1990s are so comparable due to ranking difference but here it is.

    12 in 1990-1994
    11 in 1995-1996
    12 in 1997-1998
    11 in 1999-2001
    10 in 2002
    9 in 2003-2008
    11 in 2009-2014
    13 in 2015-2019
    7 in 2020
    9 in 2021
    13 in 2022-2024

From what I see, quite often they're played in the same week so it's kinda a push by the ATP to make those weeks competitive in calendar.

It's not really an increase of those tournaments for the players if they're held in the same week.

Yes, ATP500s are literally always played in the same week as other tournaments but there were occasions when those ATP500s were kinda "big" in that week, being the only ones, the other tournaments being ATP250s.

Barcelona was one of those examples.

The grass Halle/Queen's is the opposite from that.

To me this proves that Women's Tennis is doing well. That's great!

I believe he says WTA is doing better because ATP is increasing number of tournaments trying to catch up with the WTA?

I don't agree with that, but I understand what he means.

make a living on tour. If it gets too low it's almost like an exhibition circuit, closed circuit not open to everyone with talent.

    Agreed.

The slams have a pool of 128 players, they're most important events and first couple of rounds are still even nowadays sort of exos because some low ranked players will get to play top 10 guys for the first time in their life.

If slams are pinnacle of tennis, then they should be it, but they should not be bigger than other events, in size.

Slams are actually devalued in such way.

Imagine if Olympics marathon run was 42 km, but you don't get to run 42 km anywhere else officially, only half marathons?

So how good could newcomers be at their first Olympics marathon?

Good points, world is big enough to have 1000 professional tennis players.

Barcelona was one of those examples.

The grass Halle/Queen's is the opposite from that.

To me this proves that Women's Tennis is doing well. That's great!

There are more WTA matches I want to watch than ATP.

that, but I understand what he means.> > There should be a lot more
ATP and WTA events simply because there are so many talented players
ranked 100+ who don't get a look in.  For me it's all about the slams
but I'd like to be able to tune in any week and see 2 or 3 events
going on, and I can pick and choose if I see a promising player
coming up. Ideally there should be a pool of 500-1,000 players who
make a living on tour.  If it gets too low it's almost like an
exhibition circuit, closed circuit not open to everyone with talent.

    Agreed.

The slams have a pool of 128 players, they're most important events
and first couple of rounds are still even nowadays sort of exos
because some low ranked players will get to play top 10 guys for the
    first time in their life.

If slams are pinnacle of tennis, then they should be it, but they
should not be bigger than other events, in size.

Slams are actually devalued in such way.

Imagine if Olympics marathon run was 42 km, but you don't get to run
42 km anywhere else officially, only half marathons?

So how good could newcomers be at their first Olympics marathon?

I just think the standard is so high today the 1,000th ranked player
should earn as much as a good lawyer at least.  There are so many
players who may have gone on to great things if they could earn a
reasonable living but are forced to give up and 'get a real job'. Being ranked 1,000 should be a real job.  The 1,000th best doctor in the world
is not struggling to make ends meet.

    Agreed 100%!

This year there will be 16. Just noticed it.
I am not sure if 1990s are so comparable due to ranking difference
    but here it is.
    12 in 1990-1994
    11 in 1995-1996
    12 in 1997-1998
    11 in 1999-2001
    10 in 2002
    9 in 2003-2008
    11 in 2009-2014
    13 in 2015-2019
    7 in 2020
    9 in 2021
    13 in 2022-2024
From what I see, quite often they're played in the same week  so
it's kinda a push by the ATP to make those weeks competitive in
    calendar.
It's not really an increase of those tournaments for the players if
they're held in the same week.
Yes, ATP500s are literally always played in the same week as other
tournaments but there were occasions when those ATP500s were kinda
"big" in that week, being the only ones, the other tournaments being
    ATP250s.
Barcelona was one of those examples.
The grass Halle/Queen's is the opposite from that.

To me this proves that Women's Tennis is doing well. That's great!

The ATP is for the boys, bud...  Need some new glasses?

Apparently I DO! lol. been a few bad weeks a work...
