Actually you can easily connect the dots.

Canada with its major French part was trying to officially impose English on everyone or it was the French who wanted official status for their language so by default English got it as well.

Likewise, US that lost its homogeneity feels they need to glue their nation by declaring an common official language.

Funny that a German guy is doing this, but hey... British royals are Germans too.
