Wozzy played well though, and will face Leylah Fernandez on rd 2...
Their winner will in all likelihood face Rybakina on rd 3 - who doesn't
seem injured any more... if so, then she might be a tough cookie to stop
in this tournament!
Wozniacki - Fernandez 6-3, 2-6, 7-5
Damn! What a match!
Leylah had 5 breakpoints in first set, but failed to capitalize, she was
going for way too much on those points instead of rallying. She played
way too aggressive the first set. not the best gameplan imo, surely one
should wait for the opportunity more on such important points. She needs
a pro coach not a father.
Leylah continued her aggressive play in set 2, but was able to break a
couple of times and win the set with relative ease.
On set 3 Leylah was broken in the beginning but mamaged to break back,
playing rather well after the first game. Wozzy complained from the get
go that they should suspend the match for darkness... which they finally
did at 3-3 despite nearby courts still playing. She wanted to stop the
rot obviously, turn the momentum...
However the director decided that they will wait for proceedings to end
on court 1 and change the court there. From windy court 12 to indoor conditions.
Well, they came to court 1 an hour later anjd Leylah started strong
winning 6 points in a row with great shotmaking & stuff. However Wozzy
played & defended great as well. Leylah had two match points which Wozzy cleared with big indoor serves. Wozzy managed to finally break Leylah at
5-5 on a long forehand by LF. There was lots of great play end of 3rd
set from both sides.
All in all, I think Leylah played a bit too aggressively, hitting like
45 winners but also almost as many UEs. Her problem seems to be nowadays
not lack of great shots but inconsistency & decision making/shot
selection. Good match from both. Wozzy was ice cool end of the match and
both played well when it mattered the most, just a couple loose shots
too many from Leylah & couple big serves from Wozzy when it mattered the
most.
I thought during the match that Wozzy doesn't stand a chance against Rybakina... but the ending changed my mind a bit. Maybe she has a
chance. Maybe not. We'll see. Goddamn.
