Eternal September is reliable. I do not know what you
mean by "flexible" and "easier to set up". Can you
explain?

Eternal September was super easy to set up when I joined.
I guess you just had to register via their website and
that was it.

The only downside I have come across is that the expiration
time of messages is pretty short, but since the service
is free, I really cannot complain. Someone must pay for
the storage space and it is not me.

Well, Eternal September also does not have binaries
groups so if you want them, you must go elsewhere.

It could be that there are free newsreaders

Agreed. All the discussions should be text only. If you
need fancy characters, then UTF-8 will work for you.

Even the binaries groups consist of 7-bit ASCII. Back
in the 1990s, people used uuencoded text split in
several messages. Everybody downloaded porn from
alt.binaries.pictures.erotica and the like. That
was before WWW existed or had porn sites.

Of course you have to do all those things, but the same
applies to configuring *any* client/server. I have used
tin newsreader for nearly three decades now and it is very
easy to configure.

I'm saying that if you unsubscribe you'll not "see" rec.sport.tennis
again until you find a way to re-enter the password. With Mozilla, the
thing I had to do was to delete the account, reestablish a new account
with all of the same parameters, and at that point you'll be prompted to
make a password. If you save the password you won't have ent4r it every
time, but again, if you ever unsubscribe you'll have to go through the
whole thing.

Very strange. I would definitely stay away from Thunderbird.
If you run Linux, tin and slrn would be saner choices.
