Also logistics seem to be a significant issue for Russia. Is this a symptom of a military built around flashy weapons by a megalomaniac who isn’t interested in the boring parts of having an effective military?

I have listened to some podcasts from think-tank experts on the global
military environment and they are somewhat surprised that it is coming
down this way. One factor which I hadn't thought of is the complexity
of larger-theater operations in which the Russians have little
experience or training; most of their ops in the past decades have
been limited to just pairs of planes. It is apparently hard to avoid
MANPADS unless you have whole-theater awareness.
