Close friend of mine just returned from N carolina. She stayed around
Camp Lejeune. Her and her BF like to go to collectible shops. She was shocked at all the racist items (different blackface items, signs from
the past for bathrooms or Ni____rs not welcome, etc) for sale in the
shops. Apparently they though NC was more progressive. Her BF grew up
in Houston and now lives around Little Rock, he too was shocked. They
even asked a couple of shopkeepers...they shrugged their shoulders.
Just found this interesting and thought you might.
I’m not surprised. Between I-95 and the coast, NC is basically still the pre-civil rights era rural south. My wife’s ex is from Goldsboro and she
has stories.
