    Implications?

Stefan Szymanski (of Soccernomics and various other sports economics
work) thinks this will be an earthquake of the same magnitude as the
    Bosman ruling.

‘Break your contract and sign with us, we’ll pay off your old club with a pittance and it’s all dandy.’

Sounds like another boon for the Big Teams.

I have no idea about the niceties and legalities here, but surely clubs
could come up with ways of structuring contracts that could circumvent this?

I have always been amazed that the Bosman ruling did not have more
effect than it did in terms of transfer fees (was there even a brief
period where they went down before they took off again?). Teams seem to
be not that willing to wait to get the players they want for free, or so
it seems. The situation never really got to the free agency system we
see in hockey or other sports over here. But maybe I am wrong.

If a player's contract is unilaterally terminated without adequate
cause, surely he should be able to sign with another team, right? Would
not be any different from the situation where the team buys out the rest
    of his contract.

    Ciao,
    Werner
