Euro 2024 Quarter Finals MD 2: ENG - SUI, NED - TUR [R]

Will England finally produce a performance?
Switzerland and Netherlands clearly deserved to win their second round
matches, not sure we can really say that about England and Turkey
(matches could have gone either way), although that won't have a bearing
on whatever occurs on the pitch tomorrow.

In World Cup 2022 qualifying Turkey and Netherlands beat one another (a
4-2 win for Turkey and a 6-1 win for Netherlands).
On the other hand, Netherlands lost to Austria and Turkey beat Austria........so just to confound and grain of logic there might have
been there, Netherlands will probably win.

KIT WATCH:
England are wearing their traditional home colours, that is white tops,
navy shorts (repeat - NAVY shorts) and white socks. I'm sure many will
find this welcome news.
Oh, the match? Boring. 23 minutes 0-0.

England are the team going forward, but the pace is slow. England have
looked most dangerous when attacking up the right with Saka, but so far
no breakthrough.
Switzerland controlled their last match with Italy but so far look like
a team sitting back hoping to snatch a winner on the break.

Yeah it seems a really slow pace about this game and it is from bot
teams, though maybe the 2nd half started a bit better already.

Switzerland took the lead on 75 minutes when they crossed from the right
and Embolo slid in at the far post. 5 minutes later England equalised
when Saka shot diagonally from outside the area to beat the keeper.
And for the third quarter final (out of three) we go to extra time...

69 minutes- Netherlands cross following a short corner, De Vrij heads,
no miracle save from Gunok this time 1-1.
High tempo match, both teams have had chances.

Netherlands 0 - Turkey 1
I’d describe the first half hour as end to end, frantic, but without
much quality in the final third. Then on 35 minutes, Guler crosses and “scorer of the own goal against Portugal” Akaydin headed in to both
redeem himself and put Turkey 1-0 up.

I’m not overly sure Netherlands were the better team there, but they
were the better team on the scoreboard!

I do think the Netherlands deserved their two goals.
They dictated play for large parts of the second
half, and with more creativity than Austria.
But full credit to Turkey for their fighting spirit, and
yeah, they easily could have gotten the equaliser.
I guess Verbruggen’s own Mert Günok moment is the
kind of story football just likes to write.

Is that the plan, exorcising England’s demons?
Is Southgate a genius?
