From Real_Mardin@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jul 1 22:13:48 2024
I wouldn’t like to call România- Netherlands.

As Austria- Turkey involves the national teams of two rss’ers (and I’m
one of them) I’ll simply say good luck to both sides and may the best
    team win.

That's what you get for winning your group.

I won't be too surprised if we beat them though, as we've shown some
pretty good play so far and they're not at their best. But of course
they still have the first chance.

Maybe the BBC pundits are onto something? Romania has been the better
team in the opening 15 minutes.

This is of course followed by a good Dutch spell, and Gakpo outs them in front with a Robben-esque cut inside plus finish (only with the right
    foot)

I am not sure why everyone is writing off the Dutch, they are as good as
anyone else, they probably have the best centre backs. Or what the
Limeys call Centre halfs, cus they are so stupid and think the formation
is still 2-3-5 or whatever stupid reason for them insisting on calling
    central defenders, centre halfs.

Romania has disappeared from the pitch after the first 15 minutes, and
    even more so after conceding.

(I wrote the above towards the end of the first half, didn't click

More Oranje dominance in the second half, and they advance to the QFs
    with a comfortable 3-0 win

The BBC pundits it seems have no idea about football.

No surprise here. They were at least a class above us. With the
exception of the first quarter of an hour the dutch did all the
playing, and we couldn't string 3 passes together.
Their first 2 goals cam from individual mistakes by our players, but
when the pressure is so big and constant one has to fail at some point.
The third didn't matter, we were all up front trying to get one too and
left a big hole in the defense, and of course they have the personnel
    to profit.

All in all, it wasn't a bad tournament, we won the group, did our best
against Holland. A bit harsh at the end but right now that's our place.
Maybe we can improve in future tournaments.

What a crazy four minutes of injury time.

Desperate defending from Turkey, but they also had a chance when Baris
Alper broke away, but the keeper saved.

Then right at the end, Austria with a header which looked sure to go in
but produced a save worthy of “Gordon Banks from Pele” from Mert Gunok.

    What drama.

My commiserations to our Austrian friends, it could have been different

You misspelled "Zoff from Oscar." Let's stop mythologizing Banks vs
Pele: an insignificant save in an insignificant match. Most overrated
save of all time, by a large margin.

Just watched the Zoff from Oscar save, very impressive indeed. I still
think stylistically today’s save from Gunok better resembles the Banks
save but totally agree that Zoff’s save meant more than Banks’ in a
match where the stakes were higher.

The kiss of death is whenever the English press "big em up". I was
reading all sorts of things from them about how Ralf Ragnick invented
football and how this Austria team is the greatest thing since England
66 and played a brand of football like Brazil 70 and what not.
Instead you have a good team that played hard, but were just an average team-taking nothing away from Turkei, who did a great job pulling off a
    bit of an Italian Job.

Hard to say who makes the final from that side of the bracket. I guess
common logic suggest it will be England and Holland, but no one should
be surprised in any way if the Swiss and Turks win. Especially since it
is practically home field advantage for Turkei.

It doesnt really matter anyways, the final is on Friday afternoon
    between Spain and Germany.

Oh and that final save by Gent was Neueresque, big match winning save.

After a collective groan that save drew a smattering
of applause even from the Austrian crowd I was
    watching this with.

I’ve read that in one of the expected goals metrics
    Baumgartner’s header had a value of 0.94.

    And it's over. Congrats Turkey/Turkiye!

    Yeah, congrats.

After the Netherlands had won their match comfortably I had an uneasy
    feeling that the football
gods wouldn’t like a repeat of the same match at the
same stadium at the same tournament.

Not much else to say, really - set pieces (and
defending them) are an integral part of the game,
and the gegenpress doesn’t work well (or, as in the
first half, at all) when you’re constantly chasing the
    result.

Turkey protected their lead in a very clever manner
throughout the game, and we simply didn’t have
enough quality to break them down.

The only regrets are whether our defence would have
dealt better with Arda’s (excellent) corner kicks with
Alaba in there, the same if Pentz was 10 centimetres
taller (he’s a good keeper, but unfortunately on the
short side), and the acrimony surrounding the match
regarding the behaviour of both sets of fans, and
    Demirel’s gestures.

    Ciao,
    Werner
