  • Should Israel be suspended by FIFA?

    What's going on in Palestine is worse than what's going on in Ukraine
    as far as I can tell. They're even attacking people trying desperately
    to get food from the aid trucks and worse!

    Russia were suspended by UEFA and FIFA because of their invasion of
    Ukraine. I think this sets a precedent and they should probably suspend
    Israel too myself.

    What do yous think?

    FIFA/UEFA will not sanction Israel, and neither should they.

    What do yous think?

    I think they are two entirely different situations.

    And yes Israel should be sanctioned, but in this world, israel is an arm
    of the USA and nothing bad can be done or said about them.

    explaining why and listening to their point of view? Isn't that the
    kind of attitude that leads to wars etc?

    Can you actually give us a relevant difference between what's going on
    in Palestine and what's going on in Ukraine?

    A very thorny issue about which I hesitate to express an opinion.
    Initially, the argument would have been that Israel were attacked first
    in a particularly brutal fashion (not true of Russia), but now that
    there is a widespread opinion in some circles that what is going on in
    Gaza is genocide, and the UN security council has passed a resolution
    demanding a ceasefire, I don't know what to think.

    Has FIFA ever suspended a country for political reasons unless the
    regional body did so first (eg. UEFA, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL)? I vaguely
    recall that FIFA sanctions have been about interference of governments
    into sports issues.

    The US and the UK and others were not suspended over the invasion of
    Iraq. Argentina was not suspended (certainly not that I remember) over
    the Falklands invasion. So I really don't know what the standards are.

    This article gives some background. I am not qualified to comment on similarities and differences between the situation of Yugoslavia in 1992
    and 1994, and the current situation with Israel.
