groups.google.com as generally the people here using Google Groups to
access Usenet are proper contributors and the spam is kept to a minimum.

spam doesn't seem to be a big problem so long may that continue...

I use google groups! I don't even know what a newsreader is! If we can't access rss without google groups I won't even know how to access it.

As far as I remember, G2 (by which I think is meant google groups) usually ranks highly among the most used "newsreaders" in the stats that The Doctor posts here. So that suggests that we're not in the minority; I'm not sure though.

If The Doctor keeps having this problem, this could be a problem for UPT.

You will be able to access Google Groups... well, for long as Google run
the service. The issue is that not everyone will 'see' Usenet posts that originate from Google Groups because of spam filters. You can just carry

I use google groups! I don't even know what a newsreader is! If we can't access rss without google groups I won't even know how to access it.

As far as I remember, G2 (by which I think is meant google groups) usually ranks highly among the most used "newsreaders" in the stats that The Doctor posts here. So that suggests that we're not in the minority; I'm not sure though.

If The Doctor keeps having this problem, this could be a problem for UPT.

Ray at ES has obviously tweaked his filters so less false positives are
showing up... the plan was never to block everything from Google Groups,
just catch some of the more problematic spam. (Some groups were being

post text messages to RSS or newsgroups like this, they are [generally]

Most newsreaders have a setting to ignore sig files. I don't see Dave's religious spam that makes up his signature. Google Groups show them...
everyone else avoids them! That's why highly configurable newsreaders are better for newsgroup users than Google's online interface... IMHO of
course.

There are many newsgroups in that state of filth. Even this rec.sport.soccer (RSS) shows signs of spamming. You can see on this RSS page threads like: “BUY QUALITY COUNTERFEIT MONEY”, or “BUY 100% UNDETECTABLE COUNTERFEIT MONEY £,$,€”. The “
author”, “Michael Fisher”, spams several newsgroups. In a blackjack forum, for example, he “sells” lots of books… inexistent, of course!

“The Patient-Make-Believe-Doctor” is such a pathological liar! He responded in minutes to my first post in this thread. As you can see, my post was published via Google Groups (GG). I was also notified that there were “33 new messages in this
thread”. Surprisingly, all the “new messages” were older posts I made in this newsgroup — all published via GG! My messages were reposted by “The Patient-Make-Believe-Doctor”! Then, he deleted his reply and my “33 new messages”.

No doubt, “The Patient-Make-Believe-Doctor” lies like an old dog. Why? Well, he is a sicko. He probably felt worse than usual and started this “FYI” thread. Methinks, he intended to curse us: “F(uque) Y(ou) I(diots)!”

The “comp.lang.c massacre” makes an even stronger argument in favor of Google Groups. Irritants like “comp.lang.c” won’t invade your computer. Unless, of course, you go there intentionally via your browser.

Other posters here made a good point. The newsreaders give the opportunity to download binary files directly (music, movies, etc.) In GG you can only post links to file depositories. Caveat:

“• Q: Will we terminate an account for posting binary messages in a non-binary group?
• A: We will first ask them to stop. If they refuse, we will terminate.”

For sure, it is very hard to combat the spamming operation of the “Michael Fishers” of the world. One action can affect them, however. Send them emails via the addresses they advertise in their spam. IF many such emails flood the spammer inboxes,
their email accounts may as well be closed. I know it happened in a lottery newsgroup.

It certainly is the fault of Google Groups as they are the originators of
that spam, plus Google don't do anything to stop people spamming and
rarely respond or action abuse complaints. Which proper Usenet providers
would. People create throw-away g-mail addresses and spam away via the
Google Groups web interface, then create another and another... or their
bots do.

SPAM can be distributed right from newsreaders.

It can and sometimes is, but if you register an account with any Usenet
service provider, then your account can be closed if they receive abuse complaints. All headers of posts to Usenet contain message ID's and a
trace to the account that posted it. If that account is used solely to
post spam the account would be closed. Probably after a cease and desist e-mail.
