One day in August, an employee at Parallel Mountain Sports, a retail store
at Palisades Tahoe, was folding a stack of Vuori shirts when two older
women walked into the store, each holding a Louis Vuitton tote.

It was a slow day in the store, and the pair were the only customers, said
Paul Gwin, retail manager of Parallel Mountain Sports.

The employee left her stack of shirts to help one of the women. But when
the employee returned to the stack of shirts, she noticed that half of
    them were missing.

Neither of the women had purchased anything.

That put us on alert, Gwin said.

Employees spotted the two women in the store multiple times after their
August visit. Theyd usually come in on Mondays, Gwin said, and employees
would watch the women closely until they left the store, driving away in a Tesla or a Lexus.

One time, I recognized them immediately and asked if they would leave
their bags at the counter, and they just left, Gwin said.

But store items continued to go missing. At one point, an employee
discovered that stolen items from the store were listed on Poshmark, an
online thrift store. Without concrete evidence of the thefts, however,
there wasnt much Gwin or his employees could do.

This had been an ongoing thing for months, Gwin said.

Eventually, a security camera recorded the two older women shoplifting.
Footage showed them taking something off a shelf, putting it in a bag and covering it up with a scarf, Gwin said.

On Monday, Dec. 2, Placer County sheriffs deputies arrested two women on suspicion of stealing more than $1,500 worth of goods from Parallel
    Mountain Sports.

Both suspects are 68 years old. One is from Hillsborough, and the other is
from San Francisco. One of the suspects purchased a home in Incline
Village in 2018 for $1.7 million, public records show. Both suspects were formerly licensed dentists in California, the Reno Gazette Journal
    reported.

Thefts occurred on July 22, Aug. 19 and Nov. 25, according to the Placer
County Sheriffs Office, in a Facebook post.

A sheriffs deputy recognized the silver Lexus with a disabled person
license plate moving south on Highway 89, away from the ski resort. The
deputy pulled the car over and arrested the suspects.

We had the surveillance pictures. We knew what they looked like and the vehicle that they were associated with, said Elise Soviar, a spokesperson
for the Placer County Sheriffs Office.

They were booked into the Auburn Jail on charges of grand theft and
    conspiracy to commit a crime.

The suspects were also plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the Hyatt Regency
in Incline Village in 2022. The Reno Gazette Journal reported that, in the lawsuit, the women were on board a catamaran when it crashed, causing
    injuries and mental anguish.
