Today there was a half marathon and a 10K in Glasgow. As I have a marathon
next week I chose the 10K rather than the half. The weather forecast was pretty foul, wind and heavy run, flooding etc. but fortunately it wasn't as
bad as expected.
With an anticipate finishing time of 45 minutes or under I was in the first corral behind the elites and as it turned out only 15 seconds or so behind
the first timing mat.
It was drizzling and cold before the start by my cheap kid's poncho did a
great job of keeping me warm and dry before the start. Disposable ponchos
rock! ;-)
I spotted a 40 minute pacer standing near me in the corral so thought that
it might be fun to see how long I could hang on to his back. Not very long
was the answer. Within about 100 yards he had already opened up a sizeable
gap and was forced to recognise the folly of my ambition. ;-)
The race starts off with a pretty stiff climb in the first km up St.
Vincent street. It's tough but it's the only significant climb so you just
have to power up it and hope that you don't blow up before the finish.
After that there's a nice bit of downhill followed by some flat running. At about 3km there's a bit of a climb to cross the Clyde on the Kingston
bridge which is a motorway. Always feels a bit surreal to be running on a motorway.
Once across the Clyde there's a bit of jinking around before crossing back
over on the "Squinty bridge". This brought us back on to the north bank of
the Clyde which we ran along before doing another two crossings over consecutive road bridges returning us back to the north bank. The roads
are all wide though so there was little loss of speed with all the turns.
After that it's a very flat run into Glasgow Green for the finish past
cheering crowds (despite the weather!).
My official time over the line was 42:18 (291st position out of 8000+
runners I think). Good enough for third MV60 but no age group prizes in
the 10K. I think the last time I ran 42 minutes was probably about 15
years ago so very happy with that. ;-)
