Budget Iambic Paddles - follow-up
Posted: 06 Dec 2021 07:48 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rapx8j/budget_iambic_paddles_followup/
Hi all! A month or so ago I posted here asking for recommendations on
budget iambic paddles. For perspective, I graduated last summer with a
degree in engineering and Ive had a hard time finding employment until this April when I finally found steady work. Sure, I could afford some nice
paddles from Begali or UR5CDX without going hungry, but Im planning some
big upcoming expenses such as a wedding, new(er) car, house down payment,
etc. So while Ive had far more discretionary spending money than ever Im
still trying to stick to a budget and ~$150-200 for paddles was a bit of a stretch. It seems theres no shortage of very nice but expensive paddles and terrible cheap paddles!
Anyway, thanks for all the great advice you guys offered! I ended up
ordering the UNI-730C paddles for $55 and I have to say for the money Im thoroughly impressed! They feel very nice to use and with the weighted
grippy base they dont move all over my desk while Im practicing. In the
coming year or two Im sure Ill save up and buy a proper HF station and some beautiful paddles for my desk, but I think these are going to stay in the
QRP travel kit for sure! Ill be putting them to the test during the Rookie Round-up on the 19th!
Thanks for being such a great resource for amateur radio questions and
advice! submitted by /u/1202_ProgramAlarm

FT8 on HF not hearing nearby stations
Posted: 06 Dec 2021 06:09 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rao09c/ft8_on_hf_not_hearing_nearby_stations/
I might be crazy, or my antenna might just be super weird. I live in New England. On FT8 I can hear stations across the US and Canada fine. I mostly hear stations in the South and Midwest and for DX I consistently hear
Spain, all the Spanish outlying islands, southern Europe. Strangely enough there’s a weird “belt” of the US that so pick up, but rarely anyone within
400 miles. Look at this picture.
https://i.imgur.com/3783Aud.jpg
Red is places I’ve heard, green and pink are places that heard me. I would think living in New England there would be a ton of hams around me, as this
was I believe around 6-7 PM today (the map shows all received stations for
the last 6 hours, I just left WSJT-X running while I was away from my desk).
So aside from the few stations you see around CT, Mass, NH, it’s almost as
if stations within the 400 mile ring to me are deaf to me.
My antenna is a 40m dipole from my second floor window in a sort of
inverted v down to tent stakes in the ground.
Any ideas? submitted by /u/asspirate420

Best source for antenna wire?
Posted: 06 Dec 2021 06:34 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/raoi39/best_source_for_antenna_wire/
For the last few years I’ve typically purchased 500’ spools of 14 gauge Stranded THHN wire from Lowe’s or Home Depot. It always seems to hold up
well but I experiment a lot. On my last trip the spool was priced at $72.00 which seems expensive (what’s not these days?)
What is your favorite antenna wire and where do you buy it?
Thanks for any suggestions. submitted by /u/RadioFisherman

Anyone know the power plug size on the Yaesu FT2DR?
Posted: 06 Dec 2021 08:12 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/raqddd/anyone_know_the_power_plug_size_on_the_yaesu_ft2dr/
My power supply died, but since I have a couple spare 12v 500 mA wall
adapters laying around the house, I thought Id just pick up the correct
barrel plug from Digital-key or Mouser for $0.50 and fix it myself. Problem
is, its a bit bigger than one of those small 3.5mm plugs but less than a
5.5mm. It looks similar to some size EIAJ connector, but since I dont have
a pair of calipers handy I can t really measure the tiny thing myself.
Edit: I also lost the block and don’t know where it is so I can’t splice the connector. submitted by /u/epicmylife
