WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS ---- MARITIME.
Michael VK2HFN, recently went maritime mobile on the Carnival Splendour,
along the
East Coast of VK2 and VK4.
With permission, VK2HFN picked a spot near the aft of the ship, well away
from the
ships antennas and navigational equipment. He was able to make many contacts along
the coast through several repeaters. The longest distance was nearly 180km through
VK2RCH, Coffs Harbour.
This was done on his VX6, transmitting with only 1 watt.
Once operating, Michael was never bothered while operating his radio and enjoying
this great hobby. If anyone is thinking on going on a cruise, the Carnival Splendour is Ham Radio Friendly, according to Michael.

50 years since the end of the Vietnam War and a great video has surfaced on
the
Military HF Radio YouTube channel.
youtube.com/@militaryhfradio244
This talk has a particular focus on the Vietnam conflict, the use of HF at
that
time as well as training required and of course the challenges of military bureaucracy.
Wednesday was lecture night at the Manly-Warringah Radio Society.
The topic, "Spy Radio, the Special Operations Executive, and Deception, presented
by Colin Christie VK2JCC. It delved into the vital role of covert communications
during World War II, focusing on the use of spy radios by the French Resistance.
These radios were essential for transmitting critical information to Allied forces,
often under life-threatening conditions.
SOE, the Special Operations Executive, a secret British organization, played
a
crucial role in coordinating these efforts, training agents in espionage, sabotage,
and the use of encrypted communication.
The presentation also explored the deceptive tactics employed to mislead the enemy,
including misinformation campaigns and fake radio transmissions, all which helped
confuse and disorient German forces.

Most enthusiasts would be well aware of the annual Military Radio Nets that take place on Saturday at Hamvention in the USA.
3885 AM WW2 Low power and backpack net at 1200 hours local
51.0 FM Cold War backpack and handheld net at 1400 hours local.
The 3885 WW2 Net featured everything from BC-611 to SCR-284, GRC-9 etc.
The 51.0 Cold War Net had radios like the PRC-6, PRC-10, RT-70, PRC-25 and 77 with
a good representation of older sets from the BC-1000 to newer SINGARS sets. They
had at Hamvention a good showing of German, Russian and captured Iraqi
radios.
The Czech RF_10 was another popular radio.

Reception Reports
WIA News rebroadcasters often give Short Wave Listeners a
welcome to the broadcast as they commence call-backs
straight after the Local News. Local news follows National
news in all states. It would be great if those SWL's would
email their reception reports and location to
[email protected]
Submitting news items
If you would like to submit news items for possible inclusion
in the VK1WIA broadcasts, please email your item in text to
[email protected] and don't JUST send url's links or
posters, but take the time to pen YOUR contribution.
To submit audio, email
[email protected]
and send BOTH the audio and the text
We would appreciate items certainly no longer than 1.5 mts in
length as we only have a half hour.
Remember the sooner you submit material the more the
likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of
WIA National News.
Each recorded item will only be broadcast once, if you want a couple
of mentions, please submit different slants to keep your
event 'fresh' and always if the news room is to read your
item --- write it in the 3rd person. (First if YOU are
reading your own item). If you are mentioning your own name / call
in the story, say something like "and myself, Pat, vk11abc"
Promote your local rebroadcast; details on wia.org.au/members/broadcast/contribute/
A reminder when supplying HamFest info we obviously can't
plug DEALS from commercial traders "on air", but we at the
WIA will put your supporters 'goods' in this text edition
"no worries."
We will not give blatant 'plugs' to raffles, be it raffles
at the event or "on-line".
