Ireland's First Satellite
Six years ago, the European Space Agency announced the selection of
Ireland's first ever satellite as part of their "Fly Your Satellite"
programme. The satellite called EIRSAT1 is now planned to be launched
towards the end of November this year. Built by students from
University College Dublin, it is a 2-unit CubeSat approximately the
size of an Icom 705. Its primary mission is to perform gamma ray
astronomy. The satellite has three experimental payloads onboard. It
does not include an amateur radio transponder. However, the team will
use 1200 baud AFSK for telecommand uplink and Space Packet
Protocol-encoded telemetry using 9600 baud GMSK for the downlink on
437.1MHz. If all goes to plan, it will leave Earth from Vandenberg Air
Force Base in California on a Space X Falcon 9 rocket.
