We begin this bulletin with the news of two silent keys.

It is with deep regret that we announce that the keys of Leon Markram, Z
SL1229 from Virginia and Des Wewege, ZS6DES went silent on Tuesday 21 Fe
bruary and Thursday 23 February respectively. We extend our sincere condol ences to their families and friends.

SARL DIGITAL CONTEST TODAY

The first three-hour leg will take place from 13:00 UTC today Sunday 26 Fe bruary 2023. You may use any digital mode except for RTTY with activity on
160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10 and 6 metres. The exchange is a four-ch
aracter grid square, a signal report and either a RRR or 73 exchanged by
both parties. Each QSO within the SADC region is worth three points but e
ach QSO outside of the SADC region will only get you one point. In other w ords, "local is lekker." Turn to page 81 of the 2023 SARL Contest Manual
to familiarise yourself with the rules of the digital contest.

DISTRIBUTION OF SARL NEWS

SARL News for Sunday 5 March 2023 will be the last news bulletin to be sen
t out via the MailChimp mailing list. From Friday 10 March, the number o
f e-mails per posting will be reduced to 500. SARL News goes to 1 445 e-ma
il addresses. To upgrade will cost the SARL - you - just under R4 000 per
year. The SARL Secretary looked at other mailing systems and it will also
cost in the region of R4 000 per year.

THE MEGA CW QRS WEEK

The idea is to create some space for the new amateur radio CW operator,
without feeling intimidated trying to break into a conversation at normal
speeds. The first CW QRS week runs from Wednesday 3 March to Tuesday 9 Ma
rch with activity from 15:30 to 16:30 UTC each day. The exchange is a RST
report and your name. Nothing more! Upload your log to www.radarops.co.za /radarsport/RaDAR_Sport.html. A certificate will be issued after the secon
d leg of the activity.

General Contest Rule 2 states - Clubs and individuals who are the hosts of
the contests in the 2023 Blue Book are requested to advertise the contest
by submitting a news item to SARL News for at least 2 Sundays before the
contest. Upload the news item, in English and Afrikaans, to www.sarl. org.za/NewsInbox.asp.

The first leg of the SARL YL QSO Party celebrates International Women's Da
y, held on 8 March each year. The QSO Party is on the air from 12:00 to
13:00 UTC on Saturday 4 March with CW and phone activity on 40 metres. T
he exchange is a RS or RST report and YL or OM.
Submit your log in ADIF or Cabrillo with a summary sheet or use the MS Exc
el log sheet and send it by 21:59 UTC on Thursday 9 March 2023 by e-mail t

The SARL HAMNET 40 m Simulated Emergency Contest is on the air from 12:00
to 14:00 UTC on Sunday 5 March 2023 with phone activity in the band segme
nts 7 063 to 7 100 kHz and 7 130 to 7 200 kHz. The contest is open to all
Radio Amateurs in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaz
iland, Mozambique, Lesotho, Marion Island and South African Antarcti
ca. Only contacts with these areas will count. There are four categories o
f participation, the exchange and scoring are determined by the category

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at moderate levels. There are currently six sunspots with simple to co mplex magnetic configurations visible. The probability for C-class solar f lares is high and moderate for M-class solar flares. If you want to do you
r own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for t
he week will be around 92. The 10 to 30 m bands will provide some good DX
