The theme for the 12th edition of the World Radio Day, to be celebrated
on 13 February 2023, is "Radio and Peace (https://sarl.us5.list -manage.com/track/click?u'b05a8cba9589bf8d019e5d3&idd5462a2d&e

To celebrate World Radio Day, the SARL is hosting the 2023 WRD QSO Party
running from 17:00 to 21:00 UTC on Monday 13 February. Because parts of t
he country will experience blackouts, it has been decided to run the act
ivity for four hours. The QSO Party is a phone activity on 80 metres and t
he exchange is your name, the radio station you listen to and your grid
locator. Submit your log sheet, available on the Contest page on the Le
ague website, by 21:59 UTC on Saturday 18 February to [email protected]
.za (mailto:[email protected]) . Your 2023 WRD Certificate will be e-m ailed to you.

    SARL COUNCIL NEWS

Council has received a letter of resignation from Cliff Smyth, ZS6BOX th
e Honorary Treasurer of the League. Council understands that his decision
is for personal and health reasons. In his letter Cliff has committed to
assisting his successor with all the help needed to ensure a smooth trans ition in the management of the League's financial affairs. Council will ap point a successor to Cliff as Honorary Treasurer in due course.

The Council thanks Cliff for his many years of outstanding dedication and
diligent service to the League and his commitment to the Amateur Radio se rvice and to his fellow amateurs. We wish Cliff good health and continued
enjoyment of his hobby, his family and Friends.

    INTERFERENCE FROM SOLAR INSTALLATIONS

As the South African public are realising that they are on their own and f acing the many challenges of load sheading, self-generating electricity
by households and businesses has become the norm. Generally, Radio Ama
teurs should not experience interference on HF or VHF from properly instal
led solar power installations but unfortunately it does occur when unquali
fied people do not install the system properly and use poor quality invert
ers and solar maximisers. Often fitting ferrite beads and basic filters wi
    ll solve the inference problem.

By design solar installations are not expected to radiate radio frequencie
s (RF) and cause interference as the necessary circuits suppressing any RF
radiation should be included in the design. There however are suppliers t
hat will install equipment of inferior quality. Solar installers are expe
cted to issue Certificates of Compliance (COC), but these certificates g enerally only cover the electrical installation.

If a neighbour installs a solar system and it kills HF, there are two ap proaches. Point out to him or her that the installation is causing radio i nterference and that he should insist that his installer sorts out the pro blem. If that fails, it is necessary to send a written complaint with de
tails of the interference to the Manager of the local ICASA office. ICASA
is fully equipped to do the necessary test and advise the owner of the in stallation to have the problem seen to or switch off his system.

The addresses of the local ICASA managers can be found on www.sarl.org.za/ public/licences/licences.asp. Please copy your letter of complaint to the
SARL at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) , as well
as to Chris, ZS6GM at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) an
d keep the SARL informed of progress of the complaint.

You are listening to a news bulletin of the South African Radio League.

    TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

Are you keen on technology development? AMSAT SA may just have the right c hallenge for you. The AfriCUBE development team is being expanded to tackl
e interesting supplementary and operational projects. AfriCUBE and its pre decessor, Kletskous have been a long time in finalising but that is the
name of the game if you do not go out shopping and buy everything in kit
form and just assemble it. Almost every part of the projects were locally
developed and engineered and in the process many people have facilitated
and grown their own technical abilities, adding to South Africa's intel lectual capital.

Volunteers are needed for the final development of a power supply and cont
rol unit, several sensor projects for the educational part of the satell
ite and ground control equipment. Here is an importunity to contribute to
amateur radio technology and develop your own technical skills. The proj
ect team meets regularly on alternate Monday evenings on the BlueJeans vid
eo conference platform and a few times a year for a Saturday face to face
meeting in Midrand. A face-to-face review meeting is planned for the end
of February. If you are interested, now is a good time to send an e-mai
l to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) with your interest
and contact details. We will call you.

ZS SOTA - 20 YEARS - TIME TO CELEBRATE

SOTA in ZS has now been active for 20 years. It was decided that 18 Februa
ry would be a good day to celebrate the 20th anniversary. This day is open
to all radio amateurs to join in the fun of either activating a summit or
chasing the activators. Activators are requested to post their proposed t
imes on the ZS-SOTA WhatsApp Group and the Facebook page. A certificate of
    participation will be issued.

    CLUB NEWS

Clubhouse at the Hellenic Soccer Field, corner of Prospect and Jan Shob
a streets from 11:00 CAT on Saturday 18 February. The entrance is from the
Prospect Street side. There will be items to be sold from various silent
key estates and donations. A selection of valves will also be available.

biggest amateur radio event of the year in the Cape, so do not miss it!

    PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low to moderate levels. There are currently ten sunspots with simpl
e to complex magnetic configurations visible. The probability for C-class
and M-class solar flares are high. If you want to do your own frequency p redictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be a
round 155. The 10 to 30 m bands may provide some good DX fun. Six metres m
ay also hold some pleasant surprises. Please visit the website spaceweathe r.sansa.org.za for further information.

    e elektriese installasie.

As 'n buurman 'n sonkrag stelsel installeer en dit maak HF dood, is daar
twee benaderings.

Kopieer asseblief jou klagte brief
aan die SARL by [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) ,
asook aan Chris, ZS6GM by [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]

Hier is 'n belangrikheid om by
'n Aangesig-to

Hierdie dag is oop vi

en snuffelmark by hul Hatfield-klubhuis by die Hellenic Sokkerveld, hoe

laan, Rondebosch, Kaapstad hou. Die verkopers stel om 11:45 op, kope
rs vanaf 12:00. Boerewors-rolletjies en yskoue verversings sal beskikbaar
wees.

Daar is 'n hoë waarskynlikh
Besoek ger
us die webtuiste spaceweather.sansa.org.za vir meer inligting.
