    We begin this bulletin with the news of a silent key

    It is with deep regret that we announce that the key of Marius Swart, ZS
    4XA of Harrismith went silent on Wednesday 4 January 2023. Marius suffered
    a heart attack in his sleep. He was a Warrant Officer in the SAPS and inv olved with the Community Policing Forum. We extend our sincere condolences
    to his family and friends.

    SARL QRP CONTEST ON SATURDAY 21 JANUARY

    The QRP contests are intended to be fun activities to promote QRP operatio
    n between radio amateurs. Using homebuilt equipment or operating as a port able/field station and using temporary antennas are encouraged but not a r equirement. The Summer Contest will run from 12:00 to 13:30 UTC on Saturda
    y 21 January 2023 with CW and SSB activity and using 5 W or less. Non QRP
    Stations are limited to 100 W. The exchange is RS or RST report and your
    grid locator. Please refer to page 70 of the 2023 SARL Contest Manual for
    more information.

    THE JANUARY 2023 RADIO ZS

    The January 2023 issue of Radio ZS is available for download. We look at t
    he 2023 DX Ultra-Marathon and the CQ DX Marathon, both a year-long activ
    ity. There is an article about how the DXCC Award was created and Woody,

    CLUB NEWS

    It is 2023, 22 years after the setting for Space Odyssey 2001, so it i
    s time for the 2023 Tech Talk series to begin. The first Power Hour Tech T
    alk for the year will take place from 19:00 CAT on Thursday 26 January and
    all are welcome to tune in and connect. The topic is radio related and wi
    ll definitely be of interest to all radio amateurs, but it is under wrap
    s for now.

    SARL Sunday bulletin.

    PROPAGATION REPORT

    Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
    be at moderate levels. There are currently eight sunspots with simple to
    slightly complex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high probabi
    lity for C-class and a moderate probability for M-class solar flares. If y
    ou want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective sun
    spot number for the week will be around 151. The 10 to 30 m bands will pro
    vide some good DX fun. Also keep a look-out for 6 m openings. Please visit

    tig gaan wees. Tans is daar agt sonvlekke met eenvoudige tot redelik gevor derde magnetiese samestellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n hoë waarskynlikhei
    d vir die voorkoms van C-klas fakkels en 'n lae waarskynlikheid vir M-klas
    fakkels. Diegene wat hulle eie frekwensie voorspellings wil doen, kan '
    n verwagte effektiewe sonvlektelling van 151 vir die week gebruik. Radio a mateurs kan goeie DX openinge op die 10 tot 30 m bande verwag. 6 m kan ook
