I want to buy my 8 year old daughter and her friends walkie talkies- can
you recommend some that can get through several walls and 200' in an
    apartment building?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2022 04:31 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vzmfac/i_want_to_buy_my_8_year_old_daughter_and_her/

    Hi there!
I want to buy some walkie talkies for my daughter and her friend group.
    There are three children altogether.
We live in an apartment complex. Her two friends live in an apartment about
200 feet away. Between us and them there are four walls and an open
    courtyard.
Im hoping to find some that are rechargeable, will allow them to
communicate clearly to play Roblox together and wont break the bank.
Im not knowledgeable about this stuff- so Im hoping you experts will be
able to help. Thanks a ton! submitted by /u/Left_Side_Pride

    Kenwood TS-590SG Firmware Problems

    Posted: 15 Jul 2022 03:44 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vzlm2j/kenwood_ts590sg_firmware_problems/

I just got my radio out of storage, and Im trying to do some FT8 on it.
From everything Im reading, it was supposed to install an audio driver
called "USB Audio CODEC" onto my computer, but it doesnt seem to want to,
nor is it showing up anywhere.
Kenwood implies that it will only install drivers the first time I plug the radio in on USB, so is there any way I can trick my computer into thinking
that its a new device? Theres supposed to be some kind of wizard thats just
    not there. submitted by /u/DavidGjam

    Trap resonance & repair

    Posted: 15 Jul 2022 08:41 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vzrqqw/trap_resonance_repair/

Picked up a 3 element beam that was in pieces, some of the traps look identical, Is a grid dip meter the only way to check the resonance of these
or is there another way? Also, have any of you used heat shrink to repair
these end caps and if so how has that worked out? https://preview.redd.it/pfmlaoi95rb91.jpg?width=2016&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=923d5fd93c57b086f466ef86acde19d6a95886a6

Radio technology I can't remember name of?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2022 08:27 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vzrfcy/radio_technology_i_cant_remember_name_of/

I figured this group might be able to help me out here. I am helping a
friend who is looking into some radio solutions for a public safety agency
that is in a very remote part of the country.
Way back in the day, I seem to recall at least one agency who operated in a remote part of my state having a unique radio setup (pretty sure it was motorola equipment). On the officers portable radio lapel mic they had a
mode switch they were able to flip, which then allowed it to transmit to
their cars mobile radio that would then act as a more powerful repeater.
This allowed them while on scene to push out further to other officers or
other repeaters further away with the higher output mobile with the cars
    long antenna.

I have googled a little bit and cant find anything on this. I am almost
100% sure I remember this and not dreamed this up lol. Has anyone else
heard of this? Is there a simple name for this setup? Is it still in use?
Or am I crazy? submitted by /u/TeamSCCI
