Moving to a very different location.
Posted: 22 Jun 2022 10:34 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/viaoxj/moving_to_a_very_different_location/
I’m moving from dense HOA controlled suburbs in the southwest US to 5 or
more acres in Virginia, between Richmond and Charlottesville. What should I
be expecting? I have a few questions to maybe help guide the responses, but
any area or scenario specific info is greatly appreciated.
Is your noise level usually low? My two experiences are dense housing and
some noise, or 20+ miles into the wilderness and 50 miles from the nearest small city with S0 noise floor. Should I expect something in between?
Weather. I’ve lived in a climate that is hot, minimal severe weather, and
no ice. For wire antennas and other outside components, anything special I should do? Thicker wire to handle ice?
I’ll have forested land on my property with tall trees. I have a weighted toss bag and plan on getting a sling shot or bow with reel to get wire up
high. Is there a trick to getting the antenna up there without it getting tangled in other trees in between? Or is my only hope to find two trees
spaced how I need them with nothing in between?
Propagation. I assume prop is good into EU, how about the Middle East and Africa? I have thousands of Asian contacts from the SW, guessing I’ll see that less going forward?
Anything else? Things to look for or avoid property wise? Any other tips or random musings from those more acquainted with the area?
Thanks so much in advance! I’ve never lived anywhere else. I know RF
physics and high level station setup will be the same, it’s the details keeping me up at night. submitted by /u/KDRadio1

Put the Nano VNA on a weBoost Drive Reach OTR Cell Signal Booster Antenna,
Now Wondering What's Inside. Anyone EverOpen One Up?
Posted: 22 Jun 2022 02:53 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vigkb0/put_the_nano_vna_on_a_weboost_drive_reach_otr/
Typical "I know this isnt the right sub for this..." but I AM at least a
fellow ham! I dont know what other group might have any insight on this
either.
I got this unit from my brother as it was surplus from a fleet tracking
install he did, so I got super lucky on that front.
Heres what it is:
https://www.weboost.com/products/drive-reach-otr
At the end of the mast is this relatively large cylindrical casing thats
very lightweight, so I wonder, "Whats in this thing?"
I put it on the Nano VNA and swept from 600MHz to 1.5GHz and the result was pretty interesting.
Judging by the trace, it doesnt look like its effectively a dummy load like some stubby antennas, so I was impressed with the flatness across that
range without it being suspiciously too flat. Im curious to see what it
would look like if I used a wider range...
https://preview.redd.it/aly41g3ts8791.jpg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c38d26aaedcd09e9961aa36fb84698bc9c003439
Anyway, the Drive Reach also has a version that comes with this little mag mount antenna, and my brother sent along the antenna included in this set
as well:
https://www.solidsignal.com/weboost-certified-refurbished-drive-reach-vehicle-cell-phone-signal-booster-multi-user-470154r
He said the results are pretty good even with that little antenna, so this
has me wondering if theres anything special about the larger cylindrical
unit on the mast.
Does it have a circular or conformal array in it, or something else? Or is
it just a little metal rod with a coil or something inside a fancy case?
Anyone happen to know whats inside of this thing? submitted by

I am going to be moving because of work to an apartment. Small 2 bedroom on
the 2nd floor of a 5 story downtown historical building. No balcony so
putting an antenna outside is a no go. Im thinking my only options will be
to operate mobile/portable or get a magnetic loop antenna. I havent had
much luck with these in the past and I am worried about efficiency and interference from the other units around me. Any other suggestions would be great. submitted by /u/mnett66

Am I alone in thinking HRD is far too feature-rich with not enough feature quality? I have had nothing but crashes and reboots at least every hour or
so once its open. Its like they went for the Swiss Army Knife approach but forgot to sharpen the blades....
I have sent them customer service requests both unanswered for a few days
now. Too bad you cant get a refund on software most of the time.
Anyone recommend an alternative? submitted by /u/cowboy615

Antenna Mast Advice

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vibsqd/antenna_mast_advice/
Hey all,
Looking for some advice. U.S based.
I work for a disaster relief company, we focus on delivering assistance to civilians during hurricanes. Im tasked with finding an antenna mast that
can withstand high winds and is durable. i.e. metal joints and fittings, basically no plastic on the mast whatsoever. It needs to be portable and
around 6 foot high. Were fitting a cell phone booster antenna on it, itll
have an N-female connector. Obviously we cant rely on it staying up during
the actual hurricane, but it does need to be able to withstand residual
winds.
INS MAST Mobile Antenna Signal Tripod Part Number INS-MAST (industrialnetworking.com)
Ive been looking at the mast in the listed hyperlink. This is very close to what I need, its just a little too expensive. Everything else Ive found is
made of cheap plastic parts, this thing will probably be abused by
contractors so it needs to be really durable.
Any advice or pointers will be greatly appreciated!!! submitted by

Don't bring HTs to Dodgers Stadium
Posted: 21 Jun 2022 06:28 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vht2bb/dont_bring_hts_to_dodgers_stadium/
Me and a buddy brought a couple to the game last Saturday, thinking theyd
be fun to chat on while one of us was up for a beer/hot dog run, etc. We
walked right in with them in our hands. Security at the gate didnt give
them a second look or say a word about them.
So we wandered in to the bar, and just as we got our first beers of the day
we were surrounded by four security guards, with two cops standing a few
feet back. The guards contentiously asked us what the radios were for, why
we had them, what we were doing there (uh, going to the baseball game?),
etc.
After a series of questions and answers they went from aggressive to
somewhat puzzled as to why we would want to bring two-way radios to the ballpark, and who other than security guards would ever own two-way radios
in the first place. They then told us that two-ways were banned, despite
there being no mention of this on the list of banned items at the ballpark. They copied down our drivers licenses, took photos of the radios, then told
us we could go put them back in our cars. They were nice enough to have a
guard stand there and watch our beers for us while we did though.
All in all it was a fairly stupid experience. I wouldnt recommend it.

Hi!
Im in the process of figuring out how to add 2 external monitors to my hp probook 455 G8 notebook pc.
Its a straight forward process, and my only question is one that generally
isnt addressed in customer reviews or manufacturer specs...
If youre using a USB hub that has two hdmi outputs (among other things...),
and you have not had trouble with it being noisy on rx sitting within a few feet of your hf transceiver, what make and model is it?

Hello,
Recently I was helping my grandfather clean out his shop as he is getting older. During that he gifted me his Hammarlund Radio and all of his Amateur radio stuff. Since then I have been studying to get my license but I was wondering about his callsign. With all the stuff of his I have a stack of
his postcards used to mail to his contacts. Do anyone know is his callsign could be reassigned to me? Would I need him to release it? I would really
love to keep it alive and in the family.
Also if anyone has experience with Hammarlund Radios I would like to get
some expertise on it as well.

Temporary station grounding

I am finally getting my HF station set up and just installed my ground rod.
I just realized that I forgot to order a copper strap to bond all of my equipment to the ground rod. I am going to get the copper wire and hardware
to bond the ground wire to the house ground tomorrow. My station is about
20ft from the panel box.
I want to try to have everything up and running for Field day and cant get
find anything that will arrive in time aside from stupidly overpriced stuff from amazon.
So for a field day weekend would it be the worst idea to star bond
everything at a station ground bar and use a short section of 14awg copper
wire to the ground pin of a replacement AC plug? Or alternately use a
section of circular copper wire from my station ground bar to the ground
rod/ tied in with the house ground? submitted by /u/wkuace

Loud Environment Communication Solution

Hello operators,
I work as a photographer/videographer part time. I have handheld radios for
my team when we’re doing events where we might not be close to each other and/or are not in each others line of sight.
Recently, we have started doing church conferences and they can get LOUD! During praise/worship the music is blaring and nonstop for a good 15 to 20 mins. These are the best moments for stunning footage/images. I am looking
for a Kenwood type connector headset w/ mic option that will allow us to
hear each other and communicate with each other in the loud environment.
Any suggestions?

Amateur Radio Clubs - protecting members' personal data, privacy, etc.
Posted: 21 Jun 2022 08:01 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vhuuv8/amateur_radio_clubs_protecting_members_personal/
Looking for guidance regarding how amateur radio clubs protect their
members personal information. Do you have any sort of policies specific to protecting members data? Since radio clubs are not technically a business (usually) and are typically a tax-exempt/non-profit organization, so things like the CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) apply to businesses, but I
have not read the whole act, so there may be something covering how a tax-exempt/non-profit organization may need to comply.
Many clubs email their member roster to the membership and frequently those rosters contain member home/mailing address, phone number(s), email
addresses, etc. Before you pounce on the fact that the FCC publishes
licensee information such as mailing address, etc. - I know that, but I am talking about phone numbers and email addresses mostly. You get the idea...
The CCPA is NOT a national regulation as it only applies to consumers in California, but, applies to all businesses that have customers, future customers from California - i.e. a web site visitor that is identified as coming from an IP address from California may see a notification that the
site is complying with the CCPA.
Currently, there is no USA-wide regulation similar to the GDPR [ General
Data Protection Regulation ], although there is a Senate Bill that was
drafted that generally mirrors the CCPA.
Im LESS interested in regulations and more interested in what clubs are
doing related to protecting members personal information.
Thank you for any and all information you may share... submitted by /u/Mr-Measure-Twice

I am still wanting to have the mast in a tripod as well as having it guyed correctly to the ground. Can anyone recommend a tripod solution for my

Last minute antenna/power
Posted: 21 Jun 2022 02:38 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vhobmg/last_minute_antennapower/
I have a family reunion this weekend and want to operate HF. The problem is
I just dont have it in the budget to get a battery or antenna at the
moment. So I resigned myself to being limited to HT/mobile 2M/70cm. But Ive been thinking I may be able to operate using what I already have.
For the antenna, why not just take some speaker wire (Ive got plenty of
that already) and make a very simple dipole, even if I was limited to using
my fishing pole for the center (inverted v) it should still work. But my questions are...
1-How to connect it to the radio/tuner? I was thinking of stripping one end
of coax and soldering the speaker wire to that? It seems to me that would
work. anything I am missing?
2-How do I know how much power it could handle? In other words, could I put
a full 100 watts through something like that.?
As far as the battery, I know its not ideal, but I do have an extra car battery. Now, I am sure you will tell me I shouldnt do that. But
realistically, say I dont care about the battery at all and only want it to work for a few hours on one trip, would it really be a problem? In other
words, are there any realistic safety issues, or issues with possibly
damaging other equipment?
If that ends up being a no-go, I may just hook the radio to the installed
car battery and run the car. Its a mobile radio after all (ft-891), so that shouldnt be an issue. Just depends on how much the car noise irritates my family. ;-)
Thanks for any input
