What have you guys done on the microwave bands?

I know that microwave isn’t really hip to a lot of people because of its difficulties, but there’s so much bandwidth available up there, and I’ve been thinking of the crazy amounts of data that you could transmit on the gigahertz bands.
Have any of you guys done any shenanigans using microwave that aren’t possible on UHF and below? submitted by /u/Professor_Stank

Using LMR 900 instead of RG218 with Pasternack PE4954 Type C Attachment

Hello, Im putting together a 90 Low Loss coaxial line that needs Type C RF connectors. I have two Pasternack PE4954 Type C-Male Attachments that is
made for RG218. I dont have any RG218, but I do have LMR900. Both have an
0.87" jacket diameter, but very different specifications (see below). Im assuming this prevents me from using the Pasternack PE4954 with LMR900, but
can it be done? Thanks!
Other info:
LMF900 Construction Specifications
Inner Conductor BC Tube (.222" ID) 0.262" (6.65mm)
Dielectric Foam Polyethylene 0.680" (17.27mm)
Outer Conductor Aluminum Tape 0.686" (17.42mm)
Overall Braid Tinned Copper 0.732" (18.59mm)
Jacket 0.870" (22.10mm)
RG218 Construction Specifications

Best switching power supply for station?
Posted: 09 Jun 2022 02:23 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v8rav1/best_switching_power_supply_for_station/
I have an unusual HF station that is in an outdoor NEMA4x
climate-controlled enclosure outside. Electronics inside the enclosure are
a Yaesu FT450D, LDG Auto tuner, a RigPi as a web server and a second RaspberryPi dedicated for CW, both for remote access via the internet. It
has two 120 VAC-powered switching supplies onboard, 13.5 VDC/30A (mediocre
$110 Amazon supply) for the rig and Lambda 5V/10A for the two Raspberry Pi-based systems. 50 foot run of coax to a 1:1 balun and G5RV wire antenna. When the system was indoors, it worked perfectly for almost two years. Now, with the closer proximity of components in the enclosure, I hear more background hash on HF bands. On 20M it’s particularly bad. I have properly grounded/bonded everything I can, I have a solid earth ground for rig and
tuner and all inputs have ferrite rings, leads wrapped 8-10x as instructed
to reduce HF noise.
I would just splurge (shhh.. don’t tell my YL) and buy an Astron linear 30-35A supply, but its footprint is too large for my enclosure. Any recommendations on a “high quality” switching supply, with potentially less noise to replace the cheap one?
Also, to feed 5VDC to the Pi’s, would using a Tobsun 12 VDC -> 5 VDC
voltage reducer module vs a switching supply possibly reduce hash further?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 73. submitted by

Help, Kenwood TS-520S wont transmit
Posted: 09 Jun 2022 06:25 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v8gtab/help_kenwood_ts520s_wont_transmit/
Yesterday evening, I received a Kenwood TS-520S I purchased from eBay advertised as working. However, despite reading the user manual and service manual, I cannot get it to transmit. It receives just fine, but there is no deflection in the meter when I attempt to trim the drive and plate.
Likewise, there is no movement in my SWR/watt meter, which I know works. I
even double checked the meter on another radio to be sure. After reading
the service manual, I swapped the driver 12BY7A tube with two spares I have laying around, but no change. I, unfortunately, only have the 6146 tubes on hand, not the 6146B it is designed to accept so I can’t be sure it’s not the final tubes gone bad. Am I doing something wrong or was I scammed? And
if I was scammed, should I file a claim, or would it be easier to just fix
it myself? I’m fairly confident in my electrical engineering skills, so I have no issue with attempting a remedy myself if that’s the case. Any
advice would be appreciated!

YouKits HB-1B Low Receive Issue
Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:57 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v8mp5j/youkits_hb1b_low_receive_issue/
Youkits Enthusiasts,
I have a Youkits HB-1B QRP portable rig that ran fine for 2+ years.
Suddenly, I experienced low output (about 1W) on all bands using internal
or external power. So, I replaced the final Q12 (1142). The next time I
powered up, I had the same low output. About 3 minutes later while on
receive, the receive suddenly dropped low to barely audible sigs. I then
hit the key and had full 4W output on all bands.
After resetting the rig and powering ON/OFF numerous times, it is the same
now; low receive/full power output on both AC power and battery, all
antennas and tuners. Has anyone had this issue with this rig?
One additional note; the receive sigs are actually higher with the ATT
function enabled.
After reviewing the schematic, I suspect Q1 2N7002 to be bad, causing a
high impedance Drain/Source receive path. Q1 appears to be driven directly
from the MCU with sig RA1. Any comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks and 73, Lou N2JPR submitted by /u/N2JPR

Walkie Talkie with default in-ear headset?
Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:39 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v8ma08/walkie_talkie_with_default_inear_headset/
Hello everybody,
I was hoping maybe you could give me some advice on this one, and sorry for
the potentially obnoxious question right away. I‘m not an expert when it comes to radios and alike, but there is not much time left for me to find a solution regarding my issue.
So, last week, I bought some Motorola T82s for a Motorbike-Tour.
Unfortunately though, the shipment now takes longer than estimated by the company and there will only be about two days left for testing out our equipment and setup.
Basically, we are looking for a way, to connect a headset with VOX-function through a 2,5 mm audiojack. I spend all day, trying to find a peripheral
that fits the need, but there seems to be a leak of products, at least for those on amazon, shipping with prime.
The last one I purchased was real trash and I was unable to find one, that seems to be of a better quality.
Now, my question is: would it be possible to use a standard type of in-ear headset, like the ones to come with a smartphone i.e., in combination with
a 3,5 - 2,5 mm adaptor, to get voice communication going with the walkie talkies?
I figured output should be working fine, but is there a chance VOX would be working too, given the fact, that this feature is enabled on the Motorola device itself, through a menu-setting?
Please let me know if you have any experiences with this kind of setup.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

2m bigwheel
Posted: 09 Jun 2022 12:52 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v8bmvs/2m_bigwheel/
Some replacement behaviour...
Bigwheel antenna for 2m, from aluminium plate and tubes, polythen slab,
bolts. Store bought 8x1x2000 mm tubes are just right for the job, only the
end holes have to be made and threaded for M4 bolts.
Crimp sleeve of the connector was broken off, just pliers, to pull out the white teflon insulator. Center pin brass extension is from some old bicycle part, in the adjustment of brake cable. Hole in the green plastic still too small for it.
Green puck was made with angle grinder and flap sander, "turning it" on a
nail axle.
Not tested yet.
