QRP. EFHW tossed in a tree. 9500km DX. Yeah, baby!

9500km on 5w today! Im in Roatan, Honduras on holiday and brought a Xiegu
G1M with me. II2RTC must have some tremendous ears. The HR9 prefix had to
help. Simple rigs can do some amazing things.
Eat your heart out, FT8 - This was CW. https://preview.redd.it/9rnqk4v7hh491.png?width=752&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ae6cd5a95a7a8037c9efae15103847f37cb4ff0

    Field Day is approaching

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 12:46 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v7y7dg/field_day_is_approaching/

The ARRLs annual Field Day is rapidly approaching ! On the weekend of June
24th to 26th, tens of thousands of operators will be setting up in remote locations, setting up temporary antennas, operating on emergency power, and making contacts across the spectrum.
Field Day is also a very social event. Many clubs set up activities such as building antennas, fox hunts, or making satellite contacts.
Although Field Day is for everyone, I especially encourage new hams to find
one near you. Its a wonderful experience full of new things to learn and
toys to play with. I recall my first FD very fondly; it was the first time
I got on HF, having only just had my license for a few months. If you dont
have a license, I also encourage you to go along -- many clubs have a Get-On-The-Air station that can be operated by folk who dont have their
ticket, and there will be plenty of people to help you get radio-active.
What are everyones Field Day plans ? Are your clubs setting up something
fun ? We are going to run a 2A class station with a voice station and a CW
/ digital shared station, and of course GOTA voice and VHF / UHF.
Ive put together a website with some info for my local clubs, but even if
youre not in the Seattle area and youre newish to FD, there might be
something interesting for you. Check out www.seattleradiofieldday.org for
    info ! submitted by /u/ww7psr

Is there any hope of finding a Kenwood TM-D710 for sale?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 11:56 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v7x173/is_there_any_hope_of_finding_a_kenwood_tmd710_for/

I’m in need of a D710 for a project and can’t seem to find one anywhere. I’ve heard it’s been discontinued but Kenwood still has it listed on its website. Obviously supply chain issues aren’t helping either.
Has anyone seen these listed for sale anywhere recently? submitted by /u/mysticalmusic

Hooking up radio via DC-DC converter

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 04:50 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v83fes/hooking_up_radio_via_dcdc_converter/

A crazy idea crossed my mind recently: why not to try to power up my HF transceiver (namely, Icom IC-706 Mk II) from a power bank.
All the power banks I possess are intended to charge smartphones obviously, hence they have 5 V DC as their output. Thats why I installed a DC-DC
converter in between the powrebank and the radio and set up an output
voltage to 14 V. But after I push the switch on the radio all I hear is
some cklicking sound repeatedly, several times in a series and thats it.
Anyone have an idea why things doesnt work like I dreamed? :)
UPD: Thanks a lot, my fellow amateurs! With your help I realized that the
issue is most probably lack of Amperes my power bank and DC-DC converter
are ready to provide. I think Ill opt to some more traditional ways to feed
my radio in the fields now ha-ha. submitted by /u/meticulous_jollier

Any idea on the ft65 pinout? I'd like to use this radio for packet but I
don't see any info on what cord to buy or how to build one. The clone cord
is a regular trrs cord but this connection is to the hand mic.

    6M tape measure Yagi??

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 03:54 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v82aln/6m_tape_measure_yagi/

Looking to make a cheap and compact (when stored) 6M portable Yagi. Has
anyone try to make one with a tape measure? I found some tape measures that won’t collapse even with some ‘motivation’ at a few inches over 58”. They
did collapse if lightly twisted (cross wind?). Just wondering if it’s worth trying. Thanks submitted by /u/nielmot

CB antenna. Can I use that meter to tune my 2 meter? submitted by /u/RolandTDeschain

Wideband FM conversion to Narrowband FM: I feel like it's possible, but is
    it really?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 11:04 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v7vveg/wideband_fm_conversion_to_narrowband_fm_i_feel/

Okay, so I had a wild idea last night... To start off, ill give you some
info about why I thought of it: I have an Alinco DR-605TQ mobile that only operates in Wideband, and in canada we have logging trails that I like to
go on. The issue is, they recommend/require callouts to let others know
where you are on the road, direction youre going, and where up/down the
trail you are. These callouts operate on RR (Resource road) frequencies,
    which sadly are Narrow Band.
So now my idea/potential solution: FM modulates audio by sweeping the
frequency back and fourth around its center frequency and within its
deviation. Well if wideband deviation is 5kHz, why couldnt I just attenuate
the input audio so that it doesnt deviate as much when I talk through the
mic, and on the RX I just have the volume amplified?
Seems like such a simple solution that Im not sure whether its feasible or
not. It would be super easy to make a small inline circuit with my speaker
    mic.
Let me know what you guys think,

    Receiving with a 20m half-wave dipole

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 10:26 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v7uyuj/receiving_with_a_20m_halfwave_dipole/

Im going to be putting up a 20m single band antenna, and it sounds like
this will pretty much limit me to transmitting on 20m. However, will I be
able to receive on other bands if Im just interested in listening, and
still pick up some decent signals? Id be using it with a Yaesu FTDX10

    1Hz-12MHz Amplifier

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 09:46 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v7u2ec/1hz12mhz_amplifier/

Hey all - Ive built an AD9833 signal generator for experimentation on VLF
and LF. The output of the AD9833 is a measly .6 volts, and Id love to get a buffer/amplifier that could boost the output. The 1-100Hz range would be
fun for testing servos or bio-medical sensors, and 10KHz - 500KHz is where
I lay with VLF-LF receivers and transmitters.
Could any transistor/op-amp amplifier cover this range - even just up to
    1MHz?
