Bought a semi-working $3 Icom IC-F3GT VHF HT from a local taxi driver,
fixed it, added a new VHF antenna and DIY battery eliminator, and now I
    have a refurbished handheld transceiver

    Solar Set Up

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 03:30 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v6fjsw/solar_set_up/

Does anyone here run a solar set up? I recently got two 20Ah LiFePO4
batteries, as well as a renogy backpack 100W solar panel with 20A charge controller. Unlike some other charge controllers I’ve seen, this one doesn’t have a dedicated load output. Would I be able to wire the charge controller to “Battery A”, then using proper gauged wire and ring terminals connect Red to Red and Black to Black between battery “A” and battery “B”,
and then have power poles running from battery “B” to my radio? Basically putting load on my batteries while they charge? Or do I need to charge the batteries separately and only use one at a time? submitted by

What mobile radio to use on a motorbike

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 11:03 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v69ln6/what_mobile_radio_to_use_on_a_motorbike/

    Hy All,
I am lately looking out for a mobile radio for on a motorbike.Currently i
am in the process of getting my driving licence (motorbike, already have
car no whorries) and i can almost say for certain i will buy a Honda Africa Twin or Honda Transalp.
Since i am an amateur operator, and like to chat to fellow riders/other
people i am trying to find a mobile radio to build in to the bike.
    The minimum requirements are:
    Seperateable headWaterproof head
    FM as wel as DMR
    70cm and 2m,
preferably mars-mod capable (legal in my country)
Bluetooth capable will be a pre, since it is easyer to couple it with a
    helmet intercom this way.
I will have a topcase on the back so building the body in will not be that
    much of a problem.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give! Dont know where to start to
    be honest. submitted by /u/virebird

    Antenna adapter

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 03:09 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v6f2ng/antenna_adapter/

Im looking for an adapter for an IC-F1000. It does not appear to be sma.
The Google is only returning whole replacement antennas.
Ultimately Id like to adapt it to PL-295 so I can drive the rest of my 2m antennas.
Anyone know what type of connector that is? submitted by /u/mcozzo

    Need some guying advice

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 04:55 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v6hafk/need_some_guying_advice/

So Im planning on putting up a Dave Casler-inspired antenna mast made of
chain link fence top rail. On top of it would be a Comet GP-3 (2.9lbs) and
just below that a MyAntennas EFHW-4010 (about 4-5 pounds if you include the weight of the wire).
I plan on making it either 15 or 20 feet tall and I expect Ill replace it
with a push-up pole in the future.
The mast would in line with the apex (11 feet) of the roof in the picture
and bracketed to the beams in that wall.
I know I will have to use guy lines some distance above the roof, but where
do I secure them in the direction of the house? If I spread four at 90
degrees or 3 at 120 degrees, no matter what, I will need to anchor at least
one of them to the house. I dont have a chimney or anything sturdy up there
to attach to, and the idea of punching holes in (or otherwise disturbing)
    the roof worries me.

Any advice would be appreciated! submitted by /u/bollocks_420

    Replace RG58 feedline with LNR400?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 10:41 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v693eb/replace_rg58_feedline_with_lnr400/

I have about 50 of line running from my Diamond X30 antenna, and Ive been connecting my FT60 to it. Seems to work fine for local repeaters, but
someone suggested I replace the line since the loss is quite high. Is
LNR400 a good choice? It was also suggested I get a jumper to connect to
the radio so I dont stress the connector. What type of cable should the
jumper be, and Im thinking of maybe getting an adapter so its easier to connect/disconnect the radio. It has a female SMA connecter, but Im
thinking maybe using a BNC would be good.
Basically, Ill be using the HT like a base station, and will probably get
an external mic for it as well. submitted by /u/physical_kid

What ham frequencies am I able to use for communication while hunting in
dense forest? Would UHF or VHF be better for this?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 01:38 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v6d1su/what_ham_frequencies_am_i_able_to_use_for/

Looking at getting a license. However, everywhere I look online, any frequencies that UV-5R can use (136-174 or 400-520) show up as restricted
for use for certain parties for one reason or another. What are frequency ranges amateurs can use?
Apologies for my ignorance, trying to get into all this and have to start somewhere. submitted by /u/much_curiousity_

    Checking for continuity and shorts

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 12:29 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v6bi1o/checking_for_continuity_and_shorts/

I have just set up my Homebase (UK based) and I am checking for continuity
and shorts as feel I have some issues. I have no shorts between the centre
pin and the outer on the pl259 connector and on the n type nothing from
centre pin to outside threads. However I do have continuity from inside
circle to outside threads. Is this okay? And should there be continuity
from the outside of the pl259 connector to the outside of the n type at the other side of the coax? Hope this makes sense submitted by /u/MSmith7069
