Newbie grabbed a repeater for the first time

    Posted: 19 May 2022 05:00 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ut1tgn/newbie_grabbed_a_repeater_for_the_first_time/

Ive had an interest in radio for a while now, starting with CB. I recently picked up a cheapie Baofeng UV-5R and threw an Abbree 771 onto it.
Was reading about repeaters last night, and dialed it in to one of my local repeater stations and hopped in right in the middle of a meet! It was super cool to be able to hear these folks gabbing from all over my area
(apparently this repeater has an 80 mile radius) and it made me want to actually get my license (I have NOT broadcasted, only listened).
Definitely motivation to get my license so I can talk and learn from the
    folks in my area.
This hobby is neat as hell, and grabbing that repeater was super satisfying (especially because of how much of a PITA this UV-5R can be to navigate
    lol).
Question for the smart folks: how much should I be worried that the
aftermarket antenna could damage my radio?
    Edit: US resident, in MD
Edit 2: i cant believe how helpful and supportive yall are being! This is making me feel even better about hitting that repeater last night. Im super excited to learn about this stuff and talk to some folks from all over!
This is definitely going to be a hobby of mine for years to come.
Edit tres: downloaded hamstudy.org app on my phone. Yall are the best.
Thank you so much! Ill be seeing (hearing) you on the air soon! submitted

Looking for "standalone" APRS product. Something to work with my
    Yaesu/Baofeng handheld.

    Posted: 19 May 2022 10:15 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ut899q/looking_for_standalone_aprs_product_something_to/

    Hello All!
TL;DR - looking for an APRS standalone device to plug into my Baofeng.
Hoping for a screen (even rudimentary), TNC, and GPS. Would prefer to avoid
a requirement to use a computer connection or internet.
Im a new ham and Ive really enjoyed getting into the world of dual band handhelds, repeaters, and all that. Ive even decided to get started on some projects from On The Air. One thing I am very curious about is APRS. I
would like a handheld APRS radio that is not necessarily internet connected itself. I saw in OTA the Kenwood TH-D72a and it looks like exactly what I
want - Analog dual band with tons of APRS functionality, digipeater/igate,
etc. None of the digital modes of which I am not interested.
The problem is that the Kenwood TH-D72a is $400. Has anyone made a box with
all of the APRS functionality that can plug into an existing radio? I would snap up an APRS add-on to my Baofeng!

can anyone suggest a good antenna for the 20m band that is relatively cheap
to make/buy? I dont have quite enough room for a 1/2 wavelength dipole so ideally, it needs to be smaller than that.
Im happy to make one so links to guides etc would be appreciated.

FT-991 and Alpha Mag Loop 2.0

    Posted: 19 May 2022 12:03 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/utaljf/ft991_and_alpha_mag_loop_20/

For my new shack, Ive chosen to start with a Yaesu FT-991A and an Alpha
    10-80m Mag Loop 2.0 antenna with add-on 6m/2m/440 element. I have the
radio, and while I was aware that it has two antenna ports, it never
occurred to me that the single antenna I selected might be problematic
because the radio will transmit on the 2m/440 antenna port when I tune to
those bands, and the other port otherwise. It seems to me that I would need
to omit the 6m/2m/440 add-on element from my antenna order, and order a separate antenna for those bands (it will have to be very small). Is there
a way around this? Perhaps a duplexer (which could seem strange but makes
sense in a picture)? Or is everything fine and I just dont know it?

Just got general, looking for an apartment friendly HF setup!

    Posted: 18 May 2022 03:00 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/usnz86/just_got_general_looking_for_an_apartment/

Just got my General License, looking into a rig! I live in a tiny apartment where any full-length antenna besides a random wire is probably not going
to happen. Into survivalism and backpacking. Naturally, a QRP rig such as
the IC-705 sounds appealing, but from what I hear, the low QRP wattage
makes HF frustrating for a first time HF operator. Though Im not sure Id be
any better off with a 100W HF rig at home with a compromise antenna, Id
have to take it outside car camping with a portable antenna. Im in a mountain/desert climate, so I need a radio that wont overheat outside on a
hot day, and an antenna that doesnt require trees to hang.
Im interested in SOTA, POTA, fox hunts, field day, any sort of competition. Raspberry Pi integration is going to be super important to me. Also
interested in Winlink, PSK, DStar, CW, and any data mode that has a semi-practical use.
These are the options Im considering for purchase, Please give any recommendations, or let me know of any good options Im missing. I need to narrow down the specifics on what to buy! Budget ~2k each. Ill get one this year, and the other next year
Rig 1: going full QRP: IC-705 or Xiegu G90 Some resonant portable antenna, considering a Wolf River Coil but definitely need recommendations. some
kind of LiFePo battery and PowerFilm solar charger Raspberry Pi + keyboard
for data modes and other cool stuff

Rig 2: Base station that is somewhat portable IC-7300, buy a used Elecraft K3+P3 from a local ham, used Kenwood TS590, or FTDX10 (on sale for
hamvention) Which of these is best? Some antenna (maybe compromise) that
works indoors (need help!) Portable antenna such as BuddiPole or WRC for
car camping POTA Astron rs-35 (or equivalent) for home, LiFePo battery for
    POTA

Looking for suggestions for either rig, whether it be the specific
equipment, or advice on which of the two rig types would be better for a
    new ham. submitted by /u/CMDR_Smooticus

New General, looking at HF rigs, but wondering about AM station near me

    Posted: 18 May 2022 01:41 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/usma6w/new_general_looking_at_hf_rigs_but_wondering/

So, I live about 1 mile from an AM station (and theres is also a FM station
on the same tower) (plus I live in the area with the KFBK 50K Digital Flamethrower, though its a bit away, but thats a STRONG signal.
So much that my SDRPlay gets overdrivien, even without gain on 20 and 40
meters . Im using a End Fed Dipole, which I made for when I get my HF rig,
(I just listen for now, but Im "rig ready" =-). I was able to "fix" the
issue with a 2.6Mhz High Pass filter...
So heres my question, since Im having this issue with the SDR, will I have
the same issue most likely with an HF rig, or will the HF rig be better to handle it? Ive seen High Pass filters for 100W transmit, but they can be
$$$. I was planning on getting an FT-991a, simply because I have limited
space in my office for radios as my wife now works from home in there.
But I dont see any High Pass filters on them, I do see it as a feature on
the 10DX though. I do see the "roofing" filters on the 991a, but not sure
if theyll help in this situation. Id like the 991a for the fact it also has VHF/UHF, and my twin sons are about to get their tech license. (I also have
a FT70DR, and a Radioditty 25W mobile unit in my office right now).
So Im open to ideas here, as Im saving up for a HF rig, but want to know if theres something I shoudl steer towards in this situation, or should I just
go ahead and order or build a high pass filter. submitted by

Hello all. I want to put a radio in the car. I have a cs800 dmr radio. My
issue is the antenna. We just bought a new car. It’s a 2022 Hyundai
palisade calligraphy. Their is no way in hell my wife is letting me drill a hole on the roof. Also I’ve heard mag mounts are hard on paint. It’s white so that’s probably not a good combo. Any tips? If I can’t I can’t it’s understandable. I understand the removable head and that part isn’t the problem. It’s just how to make it nice looking and no holes if possible.
Just looking for advice. Thanks in advance.
Also to note my wife is a fan of amateur radio lol she isn’t evil. It’s mainly her vehicle so I want to respect her wishes. submitted by

Please advise: Antenna analyzer for a large horizontal loop antenna.

    Posted: 18 May 2022 12:00 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/usk3ss/please_advise_antenna_analyzer_for_a_large/

I am setting out on my first HF antenna, and only now learning basics, but
want to buy an antenna analyzer for this and future (more advanced) stages
of ham life. I’m designing a sky wire loop, at a non-resonant length, and
one task (it seems to me) is to analyze the antenna, to select the right
balun (feed line will be ladder; coax from tuner to shack). But more
generally, I want an analyzer to learn on, and to grow with.
I saw that the wiki recommends the NanoVNA, and if this is the answer I’ll
do that. But you people often surprise me; there are always considerations I’ve not thought of.

Replace manual antenna tuner at feedpoint with T Match made from discreet components.

    Posted: 18 May 2022 07:06 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ussqj9/replace_manual_antenna_tuner_at_feedpoint_with_t/

I have a random wire antenna and a counterpoise attached to an MFJ-902h
tuner, then an RF choke and about 30ft. of coax to the rig. I am only using
it for 15m and can get a match of around 1.3:1.
Its not great but its the best I can do for the moment.
Id like to replace the tuner with a T Match comprised of discreet
components (caps and inductors). I dont really want to leave the tuner
    outside.
Could I open up the tuner and measure the current values of the caps and inductor with my LC meter and then build a fixed T Match with those values? Would the readings be correct while they are still in the tuner circuit or would they need to be disconnected from the circuit and measured
    independently?
I have a NanoVNA as well if that would be helpful for this exercise.

    Hi /r/amateurradio,
I was just wondering the other day if there are existing devices that can stabilize antennas with high directivity (like Wi-Fi beam antennas, LTE antennas etc.) and if not, are there any amateur projects to use cheaper
camera stabilizers/gimbals with a rigged permanent DC power supply to make
sure the antenna always points to a previously setup direction?
I imagine this could come in very handy when mounting on a
temporary/expedition mast, especially in windy weather.
