Hey everyone! I was gifted this case of old tubes. I know that some of
these have to be worth something as I recognize some of the names of them
from guitar amps. What would be the best way to go about moving these? TIA.

Good HTs around Baofeng UV-5R price point?

    Posted: 07 May 2022 03:30 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uko28x/good_hts_around_baofeng_uv5r_price_point/

I just passed my technician license exam, and Im looking into buying an HT.
I unfortunately dont have that big of a budget, so I was considering
getting a Baofeng UV-5R until I heard about its issues with spurious
emissions and that it isnt FCC compliant. Are there any good HTs at or
around this price point that I could get? Perhaps the Baofeng GT-5R (which seems to be a better version of the UV-5R)? Thanks in advance for your
    help. submitted by /u/ham_throwaway_17579

I do a lot of operating from my car and have amassed a collection of
hamsticks. Id like to know what folks are doing to keep the tuned whip
together with the lower mast when in storage. I have a mix of MFJ and shark antenna sticks. The MFJs come with a plastic sleeve which works for now but
the shark sticks dont come with anything. Ive been using rubber bands so
far which works ok, but would love some kind of case if anyone knows of something submitted by /u/Fatburger101

Noob question regarding high duty-cycle EME, ionospheric sounding,
etc----Is this appropriate for HAM bands at all? (US-based)

    Posted: 07 May 2022 04:50 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ukpjip/noob_question_regarding_high_dutycycle_eme/

As a preface: this is not something Ive invested a lot of money in. At this point its basically just a thought experiment. If the experts (you) tell me that I should go bug the FCC for my own frequency allocation, then Ill
    switch gears.
    --------------------------------------------
So I know that EME has a lot of guides available, but most of them discuss one-off communications, which isnt really what Im looking at. I was doing
some napkin math (matlab simulations) to determine the feasibility of performing lunar radar telescope measurements within the power limits
outlined for hams, and while Im somewhat hopeful that the performance will
be acceptable, Im concerned that such a usage would be inappropriate for
    the ham bands.
I believe that my waveform will be categorized as a F1D or G1D emission
type (frequency/phase modulated, single-channel, data transmission).
Without going into too much detail (mostly because Im still figuring it
out): Band choices: Depends on several factors VHF Lower UHF (420MHz) Bandwidth: As much as Im allowed, without ruining peoples day VHF bands:
15KHz BW 420MHz band: 100KHz BW PEP: Between max allowable and budget :P
Duty cycle [while active]: no greater than 50% (likely much less)
Modulation: MFSK or BPSK with PCM
    --------------------------------------------
Insofar as specific questions: I believe EME from a primary station to an auxiliary station would allow me to operate under "Earth Station"
provisions, but does ionospheric sounding imply the same thing? Or does any sort of ionospheric sounding fall under "Beacon" operation? (Or are neither
of these true?) Is this use-case something that I should just directly ask
my regional frequency coordinators for guidance on? Should I pound sand and
go bother the FCC for my own allocation?
Thanks in advance! Ill try to clarify any points that are unclear.

    Posted: 07 May 2022 07:29 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uks7du/ic2730_diy_controller_cable/

The supplied controller cable isnt quite long enough for my application. I
can crimp my own connectors - will this flat cable work signal-integrity
wise? Any known limit as to length (itll be well less than 25, probably
    about 17).
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0927YMR28/
Planning on just cutting the cable to length and crimping on a new
    connector.
The supplied cable is round, I dont know if its twisted pair or not, and if
    it is, if thats necessary.
Anyone have any experience or insight?

End Fed Antennas, counterpoise, RF in the shack?

    Posted: 07 May 2022 03:53 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ukohxs/end_fed_antennas_counterpoise_rf_in_the_shack/

Preface: I’m very new to the hobby but I’m willing to learn.
My “purpose”: 1-10 watts, 20m band, SSB.
I’m new licensed and have limited options for antennas for various reasons. One option that could work for me physically is an end fed half wave,
however, I’m concerned about the horror stories of RF in the shack and poor EMC when using these end fed wire antennas.
I understand normally these require a counterpoise to deal with the
reflected RF giving it somewhere neutral to flow… something something… that’s beyond my knowledge. Like this I could choke the feed coax at the antenna (6 turns around some PVC pipe) and stop RF flowing back into my “shack”?
However, a few of these antennas advertise being “resonant” and do not need a counterpoise.
Is this because they use the coax itself as the counterpoise?
If so, in my limited knowledge, that means you can’t choke the coax feed
(or not on very short runs, which I would be using)? And so RF is just free
to flow back down the coax line?
Basically, my question boils down to:
Are these “no counterpoise” end feds worth it in my use case?
And what’s best practice for isolating unwanted RF on end fed wire
antennas, counterpoised and choked on the feeder coax after the unun?

APRS GUI Suite on Linux (Debian)?

Ive got an old 2m rig ready to go at 25w, and I want to use it for
digipeating in aprs. I have an old laptop to pair with it, but it cant
quite run windows. Ubuntu and the likes it has no issue with. So, Im
wondering if there is gui based software that could do: Digipeating
Monitoring / Plotting Reporting / Transmitting from GPS data Sending APRS
    TXT Messages
I plan to use a rigblaster or signalink or the likes to accomplish this.
Are all of these possible on a debian system?

basic newbie theory question about amp output

    Posted: 07 May 2022 05:29 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ukq7mm/basic_newbie_theory_question_about_amp_output/

Hey all. So Im very new to this stuff and probably should be doing my
reading before asking questions, but Ive had this one burning in the back
of my mind and I cant find an easy answer anywhere. Full disclosure I am
not a ham operator and only own a cb which I just got from ebay and am in
the process of setting up, but I think the question goes generally to radio theory.
One of my hobbies is building tube guitar amplifiers and it got me
wondering what the difference is between say a 30 watt guitar amplifier and
a linear amplifier for broadcasting RF. I know that audio tube amplifiers employ a transformer to change the high voltage, low current output from
the tube power stage into a high voltage low current signal that is
suitable to drive speakers. How is this different from a radio? If I were
to attach, say, a theoretical 16 ohm antenna to the output of my audio amplifier in place of the speakers, what would happen? Conversely, if I
were to theoretically attach a 50 ohm speaker load to the output of say, a
cb radio, how would that behave?
Thanks in advance for entertaining a silly question that I just have to
    figure out. submitted by /u/automaton11

FCC ULS Vanity processing under payment regime

    Posted: 07 May 2022 07:47 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ukeudx/fcc_uls_vanity_processing_under_payment_regime/

Today is the first Vanity processing date of applications submitted on 4/19 when payment began to be required.
The good news is that applications that have a record of "payment
confirmed" in their history are processed. Im seeing both grants and
    dismissals for these paid applications.
The bad news is that unpaid applications are left in the "Pending" state.
At least, so far. I submitted identical applications on 4/18 and 4/19 to
see how the processing differed (expecting both to be dismissed). The 4/18 application was processed yesterday on 5/6 and dismissed without issue. The 4/19 application should have been processed and dismissed today 5/7, but it
was not. Im seeing the same behavior for all other unpaid applications.
Ill continue to keep an eye on these. But expect ULS to require further modifications for correct vanity processing. This might be something that affects downtime in the future. submitted by /u/kc2syk
