enly on 23 March 2022. Roy was an Honorary life member of the West Rand Am ateur Radio Club and will always be remembered for his contribution to the

AMSATSA ANNOUNCES THE ANNUAL SPACE SYMPOSIUM DATE

AMSATSA has announced the date for the association's 2022 Space Symposium.
It will be held on Saturday 23 July 2022. The current planning is to pre
sent it as a virtual event on the BlueJeans platform. There remains a poss ibility that it may be a hybrid event including a parallel physical face t
o face symposium in Johannesburg. Experience over the past two symposiums
have shown that virtual events offer many more people the opportunity to
participate. This is likely to remain as the cost of travel and accommoda
tion is unlikely to return to more affordable levels any time soon.
The theme for the symposium is "Space, the next frontier for expansion o
f amateur radio"

The symposium programme will cover topics at an entry level of how to set
up an inexpensive satellite station, how to get the most out of a hand-
held transceiver to explore satellite communication and at a more advanced
level to doing space research with your own space weather station and how
to get involved in building satellites. Proposals for papers are invited.
Each slot is 20 - 30 minutes plus a 10-minute Q&A period. The closing dat
e for proposals is 31 May 2022. Authors will be advised of the acceptance
of their paper by 8 June 2022. Final presentations in Word and PowerPoint

We want your ideas to change us! Amateur Radio is about fun, radio commu nications, technology, experimentation, self-training and friendship

The International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 is inviting you to come up
with a game changing idea, which could lead to more licensed radio amat
eurs. Make a team, share your ideas, present your proposal and bring t
his to reality. This is the time for change in amateur radio and we are lo oking for you! The best proposals will be rewarded, don't miss this oppo rtunity!

The challenge - Do you have a revolutionary idea that you would like to sh
are with the amateur community? What do you think will be appealing and le ading to more fun altogether? The HAMChallenge is a call for ideas: the be
st proposal will be rewarded and brought to life!

Applicants must submit an abstract of their idea with a short biography an
d a brief motivation statement, by e-mail to [email protected] (m ailto:[email protected]) before 1 June. A committee will review the
different proposals and preselect the best ones in their opinion for furt
her consideration at this time by 10 June. The participants will then have
15 more days to prepare a more detailed presentation of their idea to be
presented in person or virtually during HamRadio 2022 in Friedrichshafen.

CLUB NEWS

The Sandton ARC have moved their popular Tech Talk from the last Wednesday
to the last Thursday of every month. The next Tech Talk will talk place o
n Thursday 26 May.

CONTEST NEWS

On Wednesday 11 May, you need to get up early to make coffee to enjoy wh
ile you participate in the Early Morning Coffee QSO Party. The contest tak
es place on 40 and 80 metres. On Sunday 15 May, it is time for South Afr
ica to work as many stations in the Northern Cape as possible during the Z
S3 QSO Party. Get all the contest information in the 2022 Blue Book.

The third leg of the SARL Wednesday 80 m Club Contest will be run from 17:
00 to 18:00 UTC on Wednesday 18 May with CW, RTTY and phone activity. CW
and RTTY contacts count 3 points while phone contacts count 2 points. You
also earn 2 points for each new grid square and 1 point for each new Club
worked. Submit your log by 21:59 UTC on Monday 23 May to [email protected]
.za (mailto:[email protected]) . Do not use any other e-mail address.

The first leg of the YOTA Contest. This CW and SSB operating event, orga
nized by the IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group in cooperation with MRASZ (
the Hungarian Amateur Radio Society), hopes to increase youngsters' acti
vity on the air, strengthen the reputation of YOTA programmes and suppor
t the pursuits of the new generation of Amateurs around the world. The fir
st leg takes place from 08:00 to 19:59 UTC on Sunday 22 May. A second and
third round of the contest is scheduled for 23 July and 30 December.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that solar activity is expected to be
at low to moderate levels. There are currently four sunspots with mostly
complex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high probability for
C- and a medium probability for M-class flaring. If you want to do your o
wn frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the
week will be around 58. The 10 to 30 m bands will especially, in the la

AMSATSA KONDIG DIE JAARLIKSE RUIMTE-SIMPOSIUM DATUM AAN

AMSATSA het die datum vir die vereniging se 2022 Ruimte Simposium aangekon
dig. Dit word gehou op Saterdag 23 Julie 2022. Die huidige beplanning is o
m dit as 'n virtuele geleentheid op die BlueJeans-platform aan te bied. Da
ar bly 'n moontlikheid dat dit 'n hibriede geleentheid kan wees wat 'n par allelle fisiese simposium van aan gesig tot aan gesig in Johannesburg insl
uit. Ervaring oor die afgelope twee simposiums het getoon dat virtuele gel eenthede vir baie meer mense die geleentheid bied om deel te neem. Dit sal

r te kry om satelliet kommunikasie te verken en 'n meer gevorderde vlak om
ruimte navorsing met jou eie ruimte Weerstasie te doen en hoe om betrokke
te raak by die bou van satelliete. Voorstelle vir vraestelle word uit gen
ooi. Elke gleuf is 20 - 30 minute plus 'n 10 minute V&A periode. Die sluit ingsdatum vir voorstelle is 31 Mei 2022. Skrywers sal in kennis gestel wor

Die Internasionale Amateur Radio-unie Streek 1 nooi jou om met 'n spel ver anderende idee te kom, wat tot meer gelisensieerde radio amateurs kan le
i. Maak 'n span, deel jou idee, bied jou voorstel aan en bring dit tot
werklikheid. Dit is die tyd vir verandering in amateur radio en ons soek
jou! Die beste voorstelle sal beloon word, moenie hierdie geleentheid m
isloop nie!

Die uitdaging - het jy 'n revolusionêre idee wat jy graag met die ama
teur gemeenskap wil deel? Wat dink jy sal aantreklik wees en in geheel tot
meer pret lei? Die is 'n oproep vir idees: die beste voorstel sal beloon
word en lewendig gemaak word!

Aansoekers moet 'n opsomming van hul idee met 'n kort biografie en 'n kort

KLUB NUUS

Die Sandton ARK het hul gewilde �-�Tech Talk' van die laaste
Woensdag na die laaste Donderdag van elke maand geskuif. Die volgende �

KOMPETISIE NUUS

Op Woensdag 11 Mei moet jy vroeg opstaan om koffie te maak om te geniet te
rwyl jy aan die Vroeë Oggend Koffie QSO Partytjie deelneem. Die kompe
tisie vind op 40 en 80 meter plaas. En op Sondag 15 Mei is dit tyd vir Sui d-Afrika om soveel as moontlik stasies in die Noord-Kaap te werk tydens di

Die derde been van die SARL Woensdag 80 m Klub kompetisie sal vanaf 17:00
tot 18:00 UTC op Woensdag 18 Mei gehou word met GG, RTD en foon aktiwi
teit. GG- en RTD-kontakte tel 3 punte terwyl foon kontakte 2 punte tel. J
y verdien ook 2 punte vir elke nuwe ruit vierkant en 1 punt vir elke nuwe

tot gematig gaan wees. Tans is daar vier sonvlekke met meestal gevorderde
magnetiese samestellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n hoë waarskynlikheid vir
die voorkoms van C- en 'n laer waarskynlikheid vir die voorkoms van M-kla
s sonfakkels. Diegene wat hulle eie frekwensie voorspellings wil doen, k
an 'n verwagte effektiewe sonvlektelling van 58 vir die week gebruik. Radi
o amateurs kan veral laat middag goeie DX openinge op die 10 tot 30 m band
