DX Cluster for SWL / BCL
Posted: 06 May 2022 01:52 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ujj3lb/dx_cluster_for_swl_bcl/
Shiva2 DX Cluster connects to a “classic” ham radio dx cluster and repeat the dx spot to shiva2 clients while adding other spots based on .list files
and Priyom.org number station schedules.
https://iu2meh.blogspot.com/2022/05/shiva2-dx-cluster-for-swl-bcl.html
It is intended to use with SDR Console for SWL/BCL so they are able to see broadcasting stations, for example, based on scheduling day and time, spots
of ham radio operators, fixed markers about CB or PRM channels, or hf
beacons, number stations based on their schedule and so on.

Transmitting in ternary

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ujct6m/transmitting_in_ternary/
I know it’s a dumb hypothetical, but I’m curious, would it be more bandwidth-efficient to transmit in a hypothetical ternary mode compared to
a digital one? I feel like the answer is no, becuase otherwise everybody’d
be doing it by now. I guess in general, I’m curious as to if there’d be any benefits to it.
I’d do the Fourier Transform math, but I’m not exactly in an optimal spot to do it right now, haha. submitted by /u/Professor_Stank

Bit of a sad day. I took my antennas down.

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uj9l7l/bit_of_a_sad_day_i_took_my_antennas_down/
Ive been a Technician for 12 years now. Im an apartment dweller so I dont
have any major antennas. I took down my 10m dipole that Ive had up for the
past decade and my 2m/70cm slim-jim antenna, today.
Ive found people dont ever respond to me on nearby repeaters. Ive never had
a single person in the Portland area respond to me on repeaters around
here. Not once. Ive found that I simply cant reach anyone via SSB on 10m
from here. Ive found I dont particularly like a lot of the language and discussions I hear on HF anyway... so I used to do digital on 10m but I
havent been able to get my digital setup working in years now. Im just disheartened and discouraged and have been for years. Everything was just gathering dust and corrosion.
The antennas came down. I guess my FT-817d is just for picking up local FM radio stations now. submitted by /u/Proximity

Technical issue with SWR meter
Posted: 06 May 2022 05:02 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ujlwt6/technical_issue_with_swr_meter/
Guys, day 2 of HA, week four ZA. I purchased an SWR meter from Amazon
(Surecom digital $55). I soldered my own cable for it, (RG8x) but tested
with multimeter forward and backwards polarity just to make sure using
meter right and read 0 Ohm. Also tested meter by testing multiple things
and itself. I have never had issue with this radio before, and please,
before you judge, understand I am new.
BTECH GMRS 50X1. 30 RG8x split at middle with lightning arrestor, bracket
mount to brick fireplace, grounded with 4GR solid copper, 5 BRC GMRS ant.
I have had no issues with this radio until AFTER I used the SWR meter.
Plugged in everything exactly as specified, check SWR at 1.02, frequency
within .01MHz, 98%, unplug and do not use radio and very faintly, I will rx
a signal (rx only) and it will open comm and have a static noise that is
low and continuous that does not dissipate until I key the mic or hit the monitor/squelch button. It will remain silent and then rx another signal
and starts again.
Is this the SWR having fried something or hurt it? Is it RFI? I feel like,
for a beginner, I have a leg up on some because I actually did my homework
on the build FIRST and tried to set it up correctly the first time. The
radio still works and rx/tx but this is my home base station for my family
and my wife is not going to put up with static sounds or Im banished back
to the shack.

Comet CTC-50m window pass through vs RG316 jumper?
Posted: 05 May 2022 07:47 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ujdqgl/comet_ctc50m_window_pass_through_vs_rg316_jumper/
I was going to use a couple of these Comet CTC-50m window feed through
jumpers to get my 2 runs of coax in the attic space above the garage out through the back garage door, but then Id need a gender changer before they
go to the ground/lightning arresters.
Is there any reason not to just use a couple 12" RG-316 male to female
jumpers, assuming theyll fit? It would save some complexity and be a hell
of a lot cheaper. Would it be suitable for up to 50 watts on VHF? What
about FT8ing at various power levels on HF?
I know I dont have an ideal setup, but I dont want to go drilling through
walls and siding in a house Ill probably only be in for another year or two.

still looking at what to put into the air at my new house and an EFHW might
be the ticket. so that got me looking into wire.
copper clad steel is always a decent option but that marketed to Hams is
hard drawn and expensive.
Mig wire (19 or 20 awg) is mild steel or carbon steel but its copper clad
for conductivity and to protect from rust. best of all a roll is only about $15. Im wondering if anyone has tried using it and what the outcome was. submitted by /u/KL5L

Soldering PL259 connectors...OMG WTF happened??

20 years ago, my introduction to radio, I could solder PL259 like nothing. Getting back into radio now after a friend bought a bought a CB. I made
them a dipole for their radio about a month ago and did a great job
soldering the connector.........as usual.
Then I made myself an beam antenna for 2 meters and used my CB coax to test
the beam. Works great. Then got coax and PL259 to I could put the CB coax
back on the CB antenna and have permanent dedicated coax for 2 meters.
Making the cable for the 2meters, OMG, Its like all of the sudden over
night I lost my ability to solder PL259 or something. Wasted like 6 PL259
doing this. Both a mix of ones from the local electronic store and some
from aliexpress that had good reviews. The PL259 from the local electronics store are from the SAME BIN I used to make that 11m dipole for friend with
flat SWR a month ago.
Like.......I did one just a month ago.....The 1st one in YEARS..Turned out great...as usual....And now I cant do it anymore...That f🤬🤬🤬ed up man. Literally WOW in capital letters. This is getting expensive

Portable HF on a budget

Im interested in getting into HF. I am interested in mostly SOTA and other portable ops. I want to spend as little money as possible. I would like to
not spend more then 700 total.
Currently I am looking at the yaesu ft 891 and the xiegu g90. I would most likely get a bioenna battery for power. I would also need a mast and
antenna. I dont know what bands I want to opperate on so a multi band
antenna would be great.
I cant really put up a big antenna in my backyard so something I could put
up and tear down quickly would be great.
Ay suggestions for other radios? I would be ok with 20 watts but not a lot less. Any antenna suggestions, masts or anything else i should know?
Ive had bad luck with kits but would be alright building an antenna.

What do I do with a 1990s Paging Terminal?

Hello hams. My dad was a huge amateur radio enthusiast and passed away last week. I am dealing with a lot of items he had in storage and one thing he
had was a 1990s Modax 1000 paging terminal. All I know is he took out a
loan to buy it for $80k for a business he had back then, but it’s been in storage ever since paging became obsolete.
I have no idea what to do with this thing, and figured maybe radio people
like him could give me some ideas. It feels wrong to trash it but I don’t know how to find anyone who would want it or what it’s worth given that it’s obsolete. Thanks for any help. submitted by /u/Actual-Parking-3215

Beginner's Question About Finding Frequencies
Posted: 05 May 2022 09:32 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uj1d5m/beginners_question_about_finding_frequencies/
Im pretty new to HF, only been on a handful of times and still trying to familiarize myself with the radio (FT-891 with a Wolf River Coil if that helps). My question is are there any general conventions when people pick a frequency to park on. For example, I was tooling around on 40M the other
night during the FL QSO party, should I expect people to generally park at
nice round frequencies (7.251.000) or do people sometimes/often find grey
areas in the Hz range? If I find a signal that sounds clearer 100Hz off of 7.251, should I assume that the truer frequency is 7.251 and use the radios clarifier to compensate? Any other tuning tips would be appreciated.
Currently Im just aimlessly spinning around the dial, but maybe thats just
the way to go about it.
Second question: As Im spinning up and down the band, I get these slide
whistle tones. From what Ive found, its likely QRM from electronics in and around the house. I know one attack is to shut down the house and turn
things on slowly to try and find the culprit. Is there anyway to just
filter out that sort of noise at the antenna and keep it from entering the system? Or am I totally off base here to begin with?
Thanks for all of the help! submitted by /u/thespis43

What happened to the rowdy Miami UHF repeater?
Posted: 05 May 2022 10:38 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uj2rmo/what_happened_to_the_rowdy_miami_uhf_repeater/
I live in South Florida and there used to be a repeater in Downtown Miami
with a K-something 2x3 call sign that was very active with lots of bad
words and stupidity. It was occasionally entertaining when it wasnt
offensive (at which point Id just turn my radio off or listen elsewhere,
like to the weather nerds on SARnet or my nearby East Coast
Reflector-linked repeater).
Somewhere along the line the owner, from what I can deduce, set up links to other repeaters in the area. Maybe that was the beginning of the end
because, for perhaps a few years now, this repeater has been silent.
Does anyone happen to know the specifics of what happened? I assume it was
too much foul language, but I have no idea.
Its sad because this person was one of the few people around here doing something in amateur radio. And I think the owner was not a bad guy from
the dribs and drabs I heard but unfortunately the repeaters "culture" may
have gotten out of hand. submitted by /u/coherentnoise

As a part two of my pondering the idea of purchasing a comically long 7

a power line. My guess is big zap, basically like a lightning strike.
The total height of the vehicle would be 13 5", which is the legal height
all roads should be able to accommodate. But what if a line sags or
something isnt maintained and this thing whacks it?
