Reddit Invades Dayton - Dayton Hamvention May 20 - 22, 2022

Dayton Dayton Dayton!
Were just a little over two weeks away from the return of the ham radio
event everyone talks about, the Dayton Hamvention. It seems like now might
be a good time to start the thread for all the attendees. Talk about where youre staying. Make a plan of attack for the flea market. Discuss which
Waffle Houses youll be activating. Ask questions to those who have gone.
Give tips to those who havent. Try to find that last minute place to sleep.
Let everyone try to come to an agreement on where and what time the Reddit Meetup at Dayton will occur. I will keep this post updated with information
as I get it.
I do know a couple of Redditors are doing Saturday only; so if we do one
big central meet-up for a photo op, it will have to be on Saturday.
#hamvention also now exists on both the Discord and IRC (irc.geekshed.net #hamvention) - They are bridged for maximum communication. Activity has
been light but should hopefully pick up the closer we get.
This is my first year going to this thing. Hope to see everyone there.

Do Any Communities Actually Implement RRI's Neighborhood HamWatch or
National SOS Network?
Posted: 02 May 2022 03:48 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uh1wmx/do_any_communities_actually_implement_rris/
I just found out about Radio Relay International (RRI) a few days ago via
an old episode of the Dit Dit Dah podcast. Most of what they have published
on their site is focused on using FRS/GMRS channel 1 and having hams in the area act as a gateway to HF for emcomm. I like the idea. I understand the reason for the focus on FRS/GMRS, but Im a bit surprised there is no
mention of CB channel 9 in any of the documentation.
Have any communities implemented this in the the past? What was it like?

TYT MD-UV390G Gap (Water Resistant)
Posted: 02 May 2022 05:02 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uh3cqy/tyt_mduv390g_gap_water_resistant/
Hey there fellow operators,
I picked up a TYT MD-UV390G after working an outdoor event where we had a little rain. I enjoyed making a HT pancho but id prefer a water resistant
HT for that weather.
It claims to be IP67. Anyways I usually put a Nagoya NA-771 on my HTs.
However with that antenna and HT, there more of a gap than with the stock antenna, the stock antenna still has a small gap where I can see down in
there.

Should I be concerned with water getting in there?

Should I get something to seal it? Just making sure I dont go all out in
the rain and mess it up lol

Still seeking someone to improve D-Star Open-AMBE

Short of that happening (and I am not holding my breath on that or the M17 project I believe its more than logical to try and drum up talented
programmers to work on improving the AMBE code we already have as there is
only one patent left and its not clear if it even applies, and if about to expire anyway. I have a thorough overview of the why and so forth here:

Active FM 2M 70cm repeaters Houston Medical Center Area

staying in the Medical Center area. I brought an HT with me and was
wondering if anyone knew of any repeaters that are active in this area. I
threw my call out on a couple close by but did not get any response.

I need to practice CW, but without using real RF. I have a lot of work I
need to do to bring my new place back on their air and field day is 2
months away. This ham simulation popped into my mind. submitted by

How far can a signal on 2 meters go in a suburban environment?
Posted: 02 May 2022 05:19 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uh3nry/how_far_can_a_signal_on_2_meters_go_in_a_suburban/
Hi everyone! New tech here, about to be general in 2 days :) I am able to
get 2 miles range on VHF in an urban environment at 8 watts output using a rubber duck dipole. The antennas are not mounted at any height, just two
people holding them, so the radio waves are going through buildings. That rubber duck dipole should have ~2db gain (over an isometric antenna).
Suppose I used a 11 dbi yagi antenna instead on both ends, not mounted at
any height, so the radio waves are still going through buildings. As I understand it, for every 3 db, there is a 2x increase in power (in the strongest direction of gain). So, 11 db is 9 db greater than the 2 db for
the simple rubber duck dipole, which means the effective wattage (in the direction of gain) would be 3x. Suppose I used a 50 watt transceiver as
well. That would put the effective wattage (in the direction of most gain)
at 150 watts.
Based on my understanding of the inverse square law, in order to double the amount of signal (I guess.. the # of photons?) and therefore double the distance, you need to double the wattage. So if I made a table of wattage
vs distance, it would look something like this:
8 watts 2 miles (confirmed experimentally) 16 watts 4 miles 32
watts 8 miles 64 watts 16 miles 128 watts 32 miles 256 watts 64 miles
Now I know you would run up against the radio horizon at around 30 miles as well.
Now note that I am a total noob when it comes to all of this and I might be
way off. Please tell me if I am, I want to learn! But does this mean that
two radios (with the yagi antennas pointed at each other, located inside of homes) may be able to communicate ~30 miles? submitted by /u/transmissionfactory

Stupid dmr mmvdm question about testing
Posted: 02 May 2022 11:44 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugwljl/stupid_dmr_mmvdm_question_about_testing/
A local ham has a dmr radio that is vhf only and wants a hotspot but cant
find any raspberry pis that arent stupid expensive. I have 3 pi zero Ws in
a drawer. So I ordered a mmvdm board that says it supports uhf and vhf. The reviews are mixed on the vhf support.
Im getting the board today and going to get it all set up however Ive been
told and I also assumed I would have no way of testing this thing on vhf
unless I have a dmr radio, right? There is no way I can at least see if its listening on vhf or anything? I cant get together with the guy until the weekend and I want to send this back if it doesnt work. Ill have a return window that will cover it I just wanted to make sure before fumbling
through stuff this weekend only to find out it wont listen on vhf.
My plan is to just give this to the guy to use until I can afford my own...
At the current rate Im going with all this medical crap, hell be using it forever. Lol submitted by /u/thecodemonk

Heliax coaxial cable tools, connects and future proofing antennas
Posted: 02 May 2022 12:43 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugxw1s/heliax_coaxial_cable_tools_connects_and_future/
Hi Im trying figure out where to find tools for putting weather resistant connectors for ⅞" Heliax cables that are affordable? As Ill be using said cable for the primary loop of a portable magnetic loop antenna. Also which connectors should I use for connecting the cable to the high voltage vacuum variable capacitor? Speaking of high voltage vacuum variable capacitors and future proofing. I currently have a Xeigu G90, which has a rf output of 20 watts. Though Ive havent ruled out using a 125 watt amplifier or a 100 watt base station in the future. Should I get a high voltage vacuum variable capacitor that has a high enough voltage rating for the amplifier and deal
with the extra cost and possibly bulk, or save some money and get a
capacitor that can only deal with 20 watts rf? Any advice would be greatly appreciated sincerely the OP submitted by /u/Independent_3

D-Star's GPS Usefullness
Posted: 02 May 2022 10:36 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugv1zc/dstars_gps_usefullness/
Im upgrading to an ICOM IC-2820H which has the DMR and GPS module installed.
It does not support APRS, sadly, but it does support GPS over DMR. So, Im wondering how useful it is. How many D-Star users also have gps radios with
it on? Is there some sort of mapping website to show where D-Star users
are, similar to APRS? Id like to be able to have people see where I am on a map, if possible.
Anything else cool yall think I should know about the IC-2820H?
