Can you help me with setting up an HF antenna in my small yard?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 12:20 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ubt27x/can_you_help_me_with_setting_up_an_hf_antenna_in/

Hi everyone! I just got my tech license and am very excited to get started.
Ive done a lot of reading about antennas over the last few days and I feel
like Im on the verge of getting discouraged because I love reading and understanding principles, but I also just want to get on the air and make
some contacts to "get going" and I am way in over my head on the technical details (but Im trying). My goal is to do DX on HF.
I live in a small house (that is 12 peak height) with a back yard that is
75 diagonally. I dont have any trees I can use (there is a pretty high-up
tree in one corner, maybe 30, but the branches really thin out, its more of
a tree-shrub, so no large trunks that I can use to get up there safely). I wonder if theres a way to get up there to attach a pulley to one of the top branches so I can reel up my antenna, but I dont know how to do that safely.
I plan to get the Yaesu FT-991A (because I can use it for VHF, and it has
    an antenna tuner).
I also plan (I think) to get this Windcamp wire antenna which I think I can adjust for use on multiple bands (it says 5 MHz - 50 MHz). Theres some sort
of way to adjust the wire to change the length. That seems preferable so I
can re-use it if I want to try a different band.
My understanding is that 20 meters is the best band (if I had to pick one)
to get going on DX. 10 meters seems closed most of the time.
My plan is to make a sloping dipole. My understanding is that the tall end
has to be 1/2 wavelength off the ground, so 33ft. That is pretty tall, the
peak of my house is only 12ft! What would happen if I used 1/4th wavelength
for the tall end of the support rod? The antenna wire would still be 1/2 wavelength of course. Would it make the antenna unusable, or just degrade
the signal quality a bit? I rent my house and dont want to raise any red
flags with the landlords (or neighbors), or do anything dangerous since Im
not very competent in the department of erecting masts. If I can get away
with 1/4th wavelength off the ground on the high end that would be great.
But if 1/2 wavelength is a hard requirement, whats the best way to achieve that? Theres this expensive telescoping mast, but can I just construct something myself (from Home Depot)? It just needs to support a thin wire.
Maybe there is a way to get up on top of the shrub tree? Heres a picture:

    Mystery Tree
I am in Florida so I am also worried about radiation patterns. That tree is
in the NW corner of the yard, so if I use that as the high point (and so
the antenna slops down SE), then there will be gain in the SE direction,
which is not very useful for talking to the rest of the country 😳 Would there still be sufficient gain in the NW direction for DX?
Im totally lost here. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I feel like Im about to make a ton of mistakes and dont know what they are yet. All of the coax cables I find in Amazon say theyre for UHF too, is there anything
special I should get? Would something like this work? Is there anything
else I need to buy or do?
Thank you very much for any help! I hope I can help others one day, I just
want to make the leap from learning to doing which has been hard.

As the title would tell you, I drive a truck for a living, have a

i can enjoy yet another one of my hobbies while on the road instead of just
    at home.
So far Ive read into the "Alinco DR-MD520T" and the "AnyTone
AT-D578UVIII-Plus" and havent looked into antennas yet, but im curious to
see what yall would say about these radios and/or if yall would recommend
any others. 50+ watt output preffered and the higher output the better (in
    my opinion).

California hams: Good wide-area repeaters for my programming?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 10:15 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ubq87y/california_hams_good_widearea_repeaters_for_my/

Im in the process of programming my ICOM mobile rig again and already have
a few memory banks with different regions, but one of the banks I want to
set up as a wide-area / "travel" bank where I can hit repeaters that have
good coverage all over the state.
I know theres stuff up on Loma Prieta, Mt. Diablo, Mt. Oso and Im sure
plenty more -- but what repeaters do you have experience with? If you were going to build a list of repeaters to cover as much area as possible within California, what repeaters would you choose?
EDIT: Forgot to mention. Icom ic-1730a. 2M/70CM, basic FM only. :)

    Any Python programmers here?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:41 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ubmp9o/any_python_programmers_here/

Im looking around at different ham radio related python code for
inspiration and came across something called PYSSTV. This is a program
written in python that converts an image to SSTV audio and saves that in
    a .WAV file.
Playing around with that a bit with a raspberry pi, I made a short script
that takes a picture from the pi camera and overlays callsign, current date
and time, and sensor data from an arbitrary AM2302 that Ive connected to
    the GPIO.
It would be really cool to have a single Python script that would create
the image, convert it to audio, and play it. Ive already built a device to
key the radio when audio is playing. I guess Im just wondering if anybody
knows of another Python program that does more what I am after without all
    of the extra stuff/steps.
I dont really care for the idea of having to make two files if I can just
make an image and immediately transmit it. Just JPG straight to PD120 audio would be great imo. Why PD120? Simply put, its what ISS uses. submitted

What’s your “guess”. Will we see more available 1x2 and 2x1 callsigns as hams refuse to pay $35 over and over again for a /chance/ to get a 4 digit callsign; or will it continue to be as crowded as ever just more expensive
    and frustrating?
Genuinely curious what everyone’s thoughts are. An idle curiosity.

How are frequencies for new digimodes allocated?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2022 10:12 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uazdr5/how_are_frequencies_for_new_digimodes_allocated/

Say youve invented a brand-spanking-new digimode, with all the bells and whistles, definitely not destined to fade to obscurity because your
digimode is special. How do you actually decide on a frequency to occupy in perpetuity? Obviously the ITU decides things on a grander scale, but do
they really micromanage all the way down to individual digimodes? Or is
there another body for that? Is there an application process?
Or do you just hunker down somewhere on the spectrum earmarked for
digimodes in general and hope nobody will mind? submitted by /u/SA0TAY
