I had my license in 1999 but let it expire in 2011. Went to the ham club tonight, took the test and passed. Woo hoo!
I started studying with HamStudy.org (tyvm) on Sun 17 April. Only missed 7
and I can guess which they are. They were questions that didn’t come
    through the study very often.
Now to start studying for General with HamStudy.org. 8-) submitted by /u/WillShattuck

Wolf River / Buddy Stick Coil Interchangeability?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2022 08:36 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u9hhn6/wolf_river_buddy_stick_coil_interchangeability/

Doing lots of research on both systems but have this simple question....can
I substitute the Wolf River "coil" on a Buddistick system?
I prefer the buddistick system with their tripod and single elevated
radial, but I really like the Wolf River "platinum" coil and their tuning adjustment system.

    Coax type best practices

    Posted: 22 Apr 2022 09:52 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u9j6kl/coax_type_best_practices/

    Hey beautiful people!
So my HF setup is an “HOA friendly” Buddistick Pro that I setup whenever I want to use it. It works shockingly well, even for DX. But from what I
read, it can work better further from the house.
Current setup is 60 feet of RG8U from the transceiver to the outside of the house, which goes into a box and is then connected to the 25ft of unknown
(much thinner than RG8U) cable that cable with the Buddstick.
What I would like to do is extend it out another 50 feet. I can get it out
away from any structures or trees into a nice open field.
So here’s my question; can I get away with a thin/flexible cable for
another 50 feet? (135ft total run). The RG8U is stiff and likes to tangle
and kink, which is fine for running it once and mounting it like I did. But this 50 foot section would be taken down and put back up each time, so a
thin cable that’s easy to just unroll and use would be a lot more
    convenient.
Thoughts? Wisdom? Thanks!! submitted by /u/InevitableYam7

I am a new ham and just got the 5D. Now I want to try out APRS, but I don’t know where to start. I see a lot of info on YouTube suggesting I need to install at least one additional device. Other information suggests I can do
it all from within the handset itself. Are there any APRS for Dummies descriptions somewhere? submitted by /u/Marcbyon

Is it physically possible to have a wideband, VHF, high gain antenna?

For my SDR, Ive been searching for an antenna that can cover 130-200MHz (ideally 100-500MHz) and is also as high-gain as possible, lets say a ~20 degree beam. I havent been able to find any for sale which makes me wonder,
is that even physically possible? submitted by /u/CyrillicMan

    Power Supply problems

I have a Pyramid PSV-300 that I bought some time ago and it has failed (I
let the magic smoke out, IIRC I crossed wires on the output)
I have emailed Pyramid about this PS but they have no schematics available,
no information that they can give me. OK, fine. What Im hoping is that
someone can take a detailed picture of the circuit board in theirs so that
I can ascertain the values of R9 & R10 (they are the resistors that gave
    their magic smoke)
I can take a picture if necessary, but looking at the PS from the top,
going right to left is: a large transformer two jumper wires (both marked
    J15) D4 R11 R10 R9 R8 D3 D2

I want a transceiver in one room, but I want to use it from another. 2M is
    a must, HF is welcomed

    Posted: 22 Apr 2022 05:24 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u9dexm/i_want_a_transceiver_in_one_room_but_i_want_to/

Because the way the house is set up, putting an external antenna up and
getting cable into my office is going to be a pain, power comes into the
center back of the house and my office is on a front corner. Grounding everything properly is going to be a huge pain if I run the coax to my
office window and Im not remotely interested in drilling the brick.
I know some transceivers allow for remote operation from tinkering with
RCForb. From my understanding I should be able to take something like an IC-7100 and have it either in the dining room or master bedroom where
running the coax and grounding everything right becomes incredibly easier
(and far cheaper), and then access that from my office via computer for
    weekly 2M use, yeah?
Then when I finally want to use my General I can just throw it in an Apache case and grab a battery box and head outside for the HF side of things.
Are there cheaper options for local remote 2M operation than the IC-7100
    with or without HF capabilities?
What exactly would I need with the IC-7100, or another proposed solution,
to have that connectivity? submitted by /u/ryanmercer

I can transmit on a local repeater but can't receive

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 06:52 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u93blk/i_can_transmit_on_a_local_repeater_but_cant/

I made my first contact tonight but ran into a weird issue. My local
repeater has an internet live stream. I could hear both my transmission,
and other peoples replies, on the stream, but I could not hear their reply
    on my radio.
Im able to receive the hourly time/weather from the same station just fine,
but for some reason I couldnt actually receive other peoples transmissions
from that repeater. Although they could receive mine
I have the correct positive offset of .6mhz, the correct tone, and I have
enc turned on tx but not rx. So it should only be coding on transmit and
    not receive.
Ive quadruple checked my radio config and I have the same issue on both my
    DMR and my TYT mobile.
Any idea what Im doing wrong?
The repeater is 147.180 MHz + (PL 107.2)
Im tuning my radio to 147.180 and applying a positive offset of .6mhz and
    107.2 tone on txmit.
    (update)
Same radio, using their UHF repeater I just had my first 2 way radio
contact since getting my license :) So Im not sure whats up with the VHF repeater, but UHF worked perfectly, even with my antenna temporarily
leaning against the wall in my office and at lowest power.
Ill try to figure out whats up with the VHF one later. submitted by /u/kodack10

Hazer-like product for a tapered tower?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 02:53 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u8ym4j/hazerlike_product_for_a_tapered_tower/

Im looking into a 70 self-supporting tower. Its expensive, but so is the divorce Id pay for if I put up anything with guy wires.
Problem is, Im 40 and my back/knees barely handle climbing my 45 tower I already have. 70 would probably require one of those rock-climbing tents so
I can take a nap while Im up there.
Is there a Hazer-like product that works with tapered towers? I could
probably engineer something, but Id hate to reinvent a wheel if someone
already has one. submitted by /u/jimrob4

    Typical Repeater Output Power?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 12:11 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u8v41w/typical_repeater_output_power/

I am curious what the typical output power of a repeater is. One of the
clubs I am involved with is in the process of replacing an analog FM 70cm repeater with a Yaesu DR-2X Fusion unit. Apparently they have been running
the existing repeater at 5 watts out, into a linear that is 5 in 100w out.
It was my understanding that the 20w mid-power setting on the Yaesu would
be plenty (as they can overheat when used on the 50w setting if theres ever
    a large amount of activity).
FWIW, I am located in the Midwest. Not mountainous, but not the great
plains either. I believe the antenna is up 200 ft on the tower...

need to be totally buried? Thanks submitted by /u/bradyd06

1:49 unun acts like an antenna

    Posted: 21 Apr 2022 10:10 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u8shnx/149_unun_acts_like_an_antenna/

So I followed the instructions on making a 1:49 found here
After playing around with it hooked up to a 123 wire, I couldnt get the vna graph to change no matter what I did. Confused, I started packing up and disconnected the wire only to find that the graph remained the exact same!
I have no idea what the deal is. The 1:9 unun acts normal when the wire is disconnected, the swr skyrockets across the board. I copied the
instructions to the T, turns number, capacitor, the whole 9 yards.
