PSA: Announcing that you got your license today can dox yourself

Some people here are public about their identities and even share their
call signs as flair. But some users like to remain anonymous. So remember
that FCC licenses are public information. Sharing the day that you got your license could be enough for someone to figure out your name and home
address. submitted by /u/TrueBirch

Using RT Systems with the FT-70D, or others with USB
Posted: 29 Mar 2022 04:50 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/trt8w7/using_rt_systems_with_the_ft70d_or_others_with_usb/
I know that RT Systems says you have to buy their cable, but since its just
a usb COM port adapter, how is it so different from the USB COM port
adapter thats built into the FT-70D, or other radios?
Has anyone actually tried using the ADMS-70D software with the FT-70D, the
USB mini cable, and the "power-on, remove battery, hold AMS, insert
battery, press Band or Mode" process to clone the radio?
Im on a Mac, but RT systems do show a regedit to force com port selection,
so I suspect there isnt anything too special about their cable.
Im also not against paying for software, just against paying more money to
ship a cable than the cost of the cable itself, and generating unnecessary e-waste. submitted by /u/-engiblogger-

Do ARRL Radiograms still get sent?

Hello. I know nothing about ham radio, so please bear with me. Id really
like to send a friend a birthday message via ARRL radiogram, but Im not
sure if thats still really possible. A few years ago, I tried contacting my local operators club to start the message chain, but apparently the message never made it to my (non-ham-using) friend. Do you all think its still
worth trying? submitted by /u/BigKagi

Broadcast-only Spread Spectrum?
Posted: 29 Mar 2022 02:03 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/trlj8a/broadcastonly_spread_spectrum/
Are there any common wireless links (Wifi, ZigBee, BLE, etc) that can be configured to only transmit in one direction?
A lot of wireless stacks include channel negotiation handshakes and
other "back and forth" transmissions by both sides.
On the other hand, GPS is a transmit-only spread-spectrum signal.
Example scenario: A battery-powered sensor transmits data when it senses an event. It doesnt check to see if anyone received it, it just transmits
several times and goes back to sleep.
A receiver, paired with the transmitter, listens and receives the data,
without transmitting.
Ideally both would use off-the-shelf radio modules - things that work with common microcontrollers.
This would be fairly simple with a 933Mhz or 433Mhz radio module that uses
ASK or FSK. But spread-spectrum would help with noise and congestion.
I can see a problem where the transmitter needs to broadcast a carrier long enough for the receiver to synchronize (like with GPS).
Is there anything like this? submitted by /u/doctor_strangecode

Why is a pencil lead used for a diode in crystal radios?
Posted: 29 Mar 2022 11:48 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/treeyo/why_is_a_pencil_lead_used_for_a_diode_in_crystal/
Ive made a lot of crystal radios in the past, and the basic diagram of a
crystal radio always has a rusty razor blade and a piece of
graphite(usually pencil lead) as the diode.i understand iron oxide in the
blade is used as a semiconductor, but why do they always use a pencil
lead?it isnt a semiconductor,it actually acts as a resistor(more resistance than copper) and serves no particular use,as far as i know.
i recently made a crystal radio with an oxidized copper coin and an
oxidized razor blade,it is by far the best diode i have ever made, much less resistance and it probably rectifies better too.
my only guess is that the pencil lead is somewhat soft,so it wont scratch
the oxide off the razor blade, just leave a trace of graphite on it,which is conductive anyways,as i had problems with the razor blade scratching off
the oxide on the coin before.
interesting thing i heard of:ww2 prisoners used a piece of coke(not the drink, the coal derivative) mounted on a coil as a semiconductor.

LiFePO4 chargers with reasonable emissions
Posted: 29 Mar 2022 08:56 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tr5aei/lifepo4_chargers_with_reasonable_emissions/
Hello, I am looking to upgrade my portable station to LiFePO4 batteries.
They will be charged in my shack/shop and I would really like to get a
proper LiFePO4 charger for them. Unfortunately, these are all going to
he "smart" chargers, and my experience with smart chargers has been that
they completely destroy my noise floor if O use them anywhere near the
shack.
The charger I was looking at (Noco Genius) is, according to its manual, an industrial device and is likely to cause harmful RFI in a residential
setting. Props to them for acknowledging this, as my last "smart" charger
had NO fcc labeling or statement in the manual and completely destroyed 40m
for me (s9+).
Are there any relatively high powered LiFePO4 chargers out there that are quieter on RF, and deliver at least 5a, but preferably 10a? submitted

Arduino Radio Modules for long range
Posted: 29 Mar 2022 02:08 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/trlzeg/arduino_radio_modules_for_long_range/
Hello, I am wanting to control a remote telescope from college where the telescope is located at home approximately 200 km away. However, I cannot
find any Arduino modules where there would be significant range. The
closest solution I could find was the LORA radio module which can be either
433 or around 900 megahertz. However, these modules would need really tall towers to extend their horizons. Are there any lower frequency radio
modules that can be used with Arduino that can extend range beyond line of sight? Im thinking of some kind of HF packet radio system to send commands
to the telescope but not finding anything. Given no solution is found I
will probably use a GSM shield or use a relay station. submitted by /u/jebbiekerman

I have found *SO MANY* documents online mentioning "I used four of these 16 foot long fishing poles for my spreaders" but nobody mentions where they
got them, or how much they cost. Why is that? Ive even emailed authors of a
few of those articles to ask them and they STILL wouldnt tell me.

Best history book of amateur radio?

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tqvxlz/best_history_book_of_amateur_radio/
I come from cyberspace a programming background, and one of the best
history books on my world is Hackers: Heroes Of The Computer Revolution. In
it, the history of contemporary lingo (hack, bug, bork etc) is traced back
to old bbs, and stories of breaking into mainframe buildings to steal time
from the snooty mathematicians are chronicled.
Whats a book of the history of amateur radio with a similar flavour?
I want to read about Marconi, sure, but I also want to read about the less-well-known renegades and pioneers, read about how Q-codes evolved, and
how the hobby emerged both in the US and UK, and around the world.

Shout out to UK hams who own / has access to Moto DP4400 / DP4800 with activated encryption option and willing to help in testing - Help Ukraine

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tr9kbt/shout_out_to_uk_hams_who_own_has_access_to_moto/
Hello folks,
I volunteer for Kyiv territorial defense and we are looking to do some AES related tests to ensure that the radios we are about to buy in bulk and
ship to Kyiv are compatible with Motos in DCDM.
I need to temporarily borrow two DP4400 / DP4800 units of same band, doesnt really matter whether VHF or UHF, we need two radios on the same band for testing purposes - ideally with programming cable but I can buy that if you dont have it.
I will cover postage costs and can provide some guarantees of return in
private message.
I reached out to Motorola Solutions UK with this exact question but I feel
its quicker to reach out to the community.
UK hams, if you dont have any Motos but know someone who owns it and is
willing to help - please do pass me their contact details in private
message.
Thank you! submitted by /u/tycpyzdyc

Upgrade from RTL-SDR?

Hi folks, whats the next step up from an RTL?
Id like to transmit up to my license of 10W from my computer, is there a $200-500ish option for me, before taking the leap to the bigger SDRs? 6m in addition to 2m / 70cm would be a big plus.
