A company asks to install a 900 MHz radio device on my balcony - Can it be harmful?
Posted: 28 Feb 2022 10:53 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t3mubp/a_company_asks_to_install_a_900_mhz_radio_device/
Hey guys,
i guess this is not the right community to ask this question, but
unfortunately i have no idea where else to ask.
Since i live in the 13th floor i got the offer from a company that wants to establish some kind of IoT radio network, that they install a device with
an antenna on my balcony. They would pay a small fee for that.
I like the idea since i always wanted to install some kind of radio system
up there. But i have no idea if i have to worry about the constant
radiation when i am on the balcony or inside the flat. I called them for
more details and all i know is that it uses some 900 MHz based network for
IoT devices and the device itself consumes 10W from the wall outlet. So the antenna power should be below 10W?
I hope someone can give me more information :) submitted by /u/hndi321

Picking up an operator on my phone headset. What is going on?
Posted: 28 Feb 2022 11:39 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t3nwqx/picking_up_an_operator_on_my_phone_headset_what/
Hi! Ill start with: I know nothing about amateur radio so thank you all for being here and helping me out.
The story: I live in an urban area and work from home. I started using a headset to make work phone calls a few months ago and I typically wear it
all day. From the very first day, I could hear a man speaking, "breaker, breaker," "good news, good news." I have no idea whats going on but he
never responds when I ask if he can hear me. Im assuming hes using a radio,
I only hear his side of any conversation. Sometimes its so loud I can
hardly keep my conversation straight when Im speaking to clients.
I hear him every single day, which I actually kind of love because he
sounds like a really nice guy. Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on
and maybe how I can find out who he is? submitted by /u/dogswrestle

Shorty all bander
Posted: 28 Feb 2022 01:45 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t3qu3c/shorty_all_bander/
I saw some Marines with an antennae that they claimed would tune to any frequency automatically and called it the “shorty all bander”. It appears that it was hand made and not issued.
Has anyone seen them or have instructions for them? submitted by /u/Apprehensive-Ad-6161

ELI5: Deviation vs Bandwidth
Posted: 28 Feb 2022 07:01 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t3hkc3/eli5_deviation_vs_bandwidth/
Im embarrassed to even ask, but I finally have to: Whats the difference
between deviation and bandwidth, or are they synonyms? So, like, if my 2m
FM transmission to the local repeater fits inside a space of 12.5KHz, is
the bandwidth 12.5KHz or is the deviation 12.5KHz? (or both? neither?)
Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/DirtyScoobie

prolific but I keep getting "Radio did not respond" Ive tried multiple
versions of CHIRP, Ive uninstalled and reinstalled drivers for the cable.
Ive reverted drivers to version 3.2.0.0. Used 3 different computers etc.
Im stumped, does anyone know how to get this cable to work with CHIRP? Ive

Hello, Im trying to help an elderly ham radio enthusiast get ahold of a
2022 MFJ catalog for ordering parts. I saw online we could download it, but
he is terribly opposed to using the computer. Ive tried emailing them many times to no avail. Does anyone know how to request a catalog to come in the mail? Or if you know of any catalogs from other companies, those would be helpful, too. He has a bunch of catalogs from the 70s but we just need something current. Thank you so much! submitted by /u/waggledaz

Yagi-Uda Optimization for Wifi Antenna
Posted: 28 Feb 2022 11:07 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t3n6ah/yagiuda_optimization_for_wifi_antenna/
https://www.changpuak.ch/electronics/yagi_uda_antenna_DL6WU.php I’m using this antenna design for a Science Olympiad competition where I need to
maximize the distance that a computer registers a signal. I’m using a 8 element antenna since I have to fit it in a 15cm cube, (tilted diagonally).
A successful connection is when a
I have 5 (fairly simple) questions: 1. What width wire should I use for the elements.
What reflector design is optimal? The calculator lists a specific distance
and the picture shows several rods. I’ve even seen some Yagi Uda use flat sheets as a reflector.
Can I use 3D printed PETG filament as a frame encompassing the sides of the directors without disrupting the connection?
The signal is listed as an 802.11 encoded 2.4GHz signal. However further research reveals this uses several frequency bands. Which frequency should
I optimize the Yagi-Uda for in order to get the maximum distance
connection? I don’t care about bandwidth or anything, just the measured db that the computer reads.
The website recommends a folded dipole
https://www.changpuak.ch/electronics/Dipole_folded.php, which apparently
has an impedance of 300 Ohms. I know router has a source impedance of 50
ohms, so impedance will be drastically mismatched, how can I resolve this issue? Also, attaching the folded dipole to the Yagi Uda won’t change this impedance? (Also I thought impedance was dependent on frequency so I don’t know why the calculator says a singular number)
If you have any ideas about any of these questions please feel free to
weigh in! Any help is appreciated.

Antenna mast help!

Hello all! First off thanks for any advice anyone can provide. While this
mast isn’t going to be for radio, y’all’s expertise definitely is needed here!
I am looking to put up an antenna mast at my partners property near her
horse arena. I can’t use guy wires due to the risk to the horses on the property, and she does not wish to make any permanent holes into her arena structure so ground level mast that clears the roofline is my option here. I’ve attached some pictures. I’m thinking of cementing some galvanized pipe and then using that rail mounting by the sub panel (see pics) to add some
stand offs to support it. Or even using stand offs from that round post to support it. The top of that smaller post is probably 7-8 feet (need to get
out and measure).
My question is how much antenna mast you think I could put up with that
system. It’ll be holding a small dry box at the top with ~ 18” fiberglass antenna. Secondary question is do I even need to cement the post or could I
do something like this/how much mast could I put up with this:

I guess my question is, is there advice I should know before calling CQ or

So recently my iCom IC 718 was sent in for repair as it was outputting low power, only 10 watts on 80 meters and 50 on 40 up. I recieved the "your
radio repair is in progress" notification from iCom a few days ago, I am wondering about how long an iCom repair usually takes? Its their Washington center. submitted by /u/wassup2190
