Just got back from the exam at my local club. Tested through the technician
and general. Super excited to be more than a ‘listen only’ member of the community. I just wanted to say thanks for being such a great community for someone new to the hobby. submitted by /u/redhandle07

APRS reception from the ISS
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 06:39 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/swqp10/aprs_reception_from_the_iss/
Ive been trying to receive APRS broadcasts from the ISS. So I built a
ground plane antenna, tuned to 145.825MHz using my nanoVNA. It is connected
to an FM block / RTL-SDR V3 and from there into a Raspberry Pi. Im decoding
the data using Ionosphere (
https://github.com/cceremuga/ionosphere). This
uses rtl_fm on the Pi to pipe the audio in real time to Ionosphere.
The antenna is elevated to about 4.5m above the ground, with a pretty good
view of most of the sky.
NanoVNA output:
Looks to be well tuned for reception around 145MHz - SWR = 1.07 between 145
and 146MHz
So far, over multiple passes Ive received:
time="2022-02-12T22:10:29+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to BP;?$]-5 QSO Nr 874 RR3v)"
time="2022-02-13T00:33:07+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to (=%:SY-9 QSO Nr 10785 I46^ pid=7D)" time="2022-02-13T23:24:17+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to ,G)^(\\-12 QSO Nr 1977 I62- pid=5B)" time="2022-02-14T16:56:18+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to P\"!T0X-11 QSO Nr 12078 RNR2v pid=91)" time="2022-02-14T22:23:19+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to J\"\"A&+-7 QSO Nr 3925 I67^ pid=84)" time="2022-02-15T08:29:39+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to H0VB;B-1 QSO Nr 3223 unknown S (0xd)6- pid=8E)" time="2022-02-16T17:35:36+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to S)1+G-4 QSO Nr 12636 RR1v pid=45)" time="2022-02-19T08:23:28+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to +-^#EN-13 QSO Nr 2373 I55+ pid=0A)" time="2022-02-20T00:09:02+13:00" level=warning msg="aprs: invalid packet (FSK1200: fm ? to ]QT>\\M-9 QSO Nr 5468 RNR1- pid=C3)"
So it looks like Im picking up something, with the date / time combinations aligning to when the ISS is passing over Auckland, New Zealand, however
there seems to be limited useful info in the messages.
What I can make out is: fm - assuming this is short for "from" QSO -
contact Nr - near
I cant understand what the numbers mean after the fr, which dont align to
the ham grid.
Any suggestions with how to decode the rest of the message?
Are there other decoders which would work better?
Any other ideas / pointers? submitted by /u/KiwiEntropy

I use a Yaesu FT-4X to hit the local repeaters, but was unable to be heard checking into a weekly net a while ago. I thought it was me, then
discovered the repeater I use was actually off(thanks to a jammer). Unfortunately before I found that out Id monkeyed with my HT-and now I apparently cant transmit/be heard at all.
Im still a newbie(as if you couldnt tell)...but Im pretty sure I mustve
turned something OFF that should be ON, or vice-versa. Its so frustrating.
I can hear the station perfectly as always, just cant transmit. Any ideas
what I should be trying? submitted by /u/blackwingy

Antenna Help
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 07:41 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/swruxv/antenna_help/
I passed tech and general last Saturday and as a gift I bought myself a
yaesu ft70dr. Keep seeing videos where people are disappointed in abree antennas, Ive heard Nagoyas are poo, and of course theres people saying bad stuff about diamond. Are there any smart fellas out there who have
something good to say about a certain antenna? Seems like theres a lot more
of people hating things than loving them and Id love for someone to point
me in the right direction. (Also, where to buy it to be sure its not a fake would be helpful) submitted by /u/tgsleech

Trouble getting audio directed to WSJT-X on a Macbook, any help appreciated
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 03:47 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/swnb01/trouble_getting_audio_directed_to_wsjtx_on_a/
Hoping this is something silly, but Ive read lots of previous posts and
havent found a fix...
I have a new macbook pro and two radios to work with: ic7100 and kx2 (icom
has a built-in soundcard, and w/ the kx2 im using a cheap logitech external sound card which previously worked with my old mbp).
With both radios:
- I can control the rig via wsjt-x
- sound card shows up in "Audio MIDI Setup". When I select the output for
the radios sound card, I see the audio level meter move corresponding to my audio gain settings on the 7100/kx2. So I know that audio is getting from
the radio to the laptop.
- I selected the appropriate sound card under "audio" in wsjt-x preferences
- confirming its not set to laptops speaker or mic.
Despite all this, audio does not make it to wsjt-x at all. While receiving,
the dB meter in the lower left corner stays flat at 0db, and the waterfall stays completely empty. Ive tried adjusting audio at the radios while
receiving and I can see the audio meter change within the Audio MIDI Setup menu, but the audio meter in wsjt-x never changes.
Any tips? thanks!! submitted by /u/swlisten
