How to operate a transceiver with severe Parkinson

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 06:59 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sofl0f/how_to_operate_a_transceiver_with_severe_parkinson/

Dear all, I am the chair of the ICT commission for the largest HAM
foundation in my country. Today I received the unusual request with a plea
    for advice.
The advice was from a daughter who seeks to help her father regain the
ability to operate a transceiver, an ability which he has unfortunately
lost due to a severe case of Parkinson.
Unfortunately, I lack the knowledge to give adequate advice in this area
and hope you could spent the time to share yours. Any tool or aid would be valid, a computer, huge knobs, voice control.

    Two questions about using AREDN.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:07 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sp2azd/two_questions_about_using_aredn/

Im looking into buying components to build a test AREDN and I had two main questions.
I wanted to know; If I were standing in front of an ARDEN node with two antennas could I use my laptop Wi-Fi/ any Wi-Fi antenna to connect to the network using just one of the antennas on the node? (assuming same channel,
BW, signal quality, etc.) Would I need to use an antenna running AREDN
firmware and then have it connect to an AP to access the network, or is the signal from an AREDN antenna useable as normal (to the computer) Wi-Fi?
The second question is, do I need to use a managed switch for all nodes? Or
is unmanaged okay to use in a simple node? submitted by

Recommend a better SDR for Linux system?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 10:07 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sojvwn/recommend_a_better_sdr_for_linux_system/

Can anyone recommend an SDR in the $100 - $250 range thats well supported
on Linux? I have an SDRplay RSP1 but the Linux software the manufacturer recommends (CubicSDR) does not want to cooperate. It either cant find the
RSP1, or it crashes with a segmentation fault.
I gave up on Windows for radio purposes because Win10 decides for itself
when to install updates and reboot. I cant trust it if I want to leave a monitoring application running. submitted by /u/Hinermad

Anyone able to help me with a Pigate-RMS and an IC-229H?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 10:06 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sojvgh/anyone_able_to_help_me_with_a_pigaterms_and_an/

Im struggling to setup a VHF Winlink gateway using a Pigate-RMS.
My radio is a IC-229h, since I happen to have it handy. It works fine for
    voice tx and rx.
The radio pinout is here: https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamhf/3839plug.jpg
The Pigate-RMS has its pinout documented here: http://nebula.wsimg.com/76b1d5408eb2f19db24a625bf622f8a3?AccessKeyId=E0A1A44EFD82BDBA8378&disposition=0&alloworigin=1
    To that end, I took the following ICOM TinyTNC 1 1 5 3 6 6 spkr
5 7 grnd spkr grnd grnd
I know that the PiGate-RMS works, mostly because I bought it assembled and tested by Mark KD0QYN.
Ive tried a couple of times to pin out the mic, and re-do things.
Im at a loss. Nobody can hit my station. Id test it myself, but I dont have
a spare VHF antenna to stick up on the roof.
I am positive Ive screwed something up. The radio spikes up when traffic is heard, but nothing gets into the R-Pi, which tells me Ive likely messed up
the pinout... Somehow... Even though I dont understand how.
Anyone got any suggestions? submitted by /u/Rebootkid

New Antenna has good swr as is, but would counterpoise make a noticeable difference?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 02:09 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sopexc/new_antenna_has_good_swr_as_is_but_would/

Put up my new end fed( EMCOMM-II) and getting better swr than expected.
About 1.5 on 80 meters without a tuner. Would adding a counterpoise make
    any noticeable improvement ?
On a side note: have any of you ever had your window crimp the coax down
enough to effect the swr? Never ran into this before till last
night ..guessing because my house uses metal windows. Will get a small
board and cut out a notch for the coax to prevent this from happening
    again. submitted by /u/fletch101e

Some questions about DMR vs D-STAR ...

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 06:22 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/soerbf/some_questions_about_dmr_vs_dstar/

    Maybe 3-4 years ago I bought a Kenwood d-star ht (TH-D74A) and a hotspot.
Used it for maybe 8 months, talked around the world and enjoyed it.
At first I tried hitting d-star repeaters but I could only just barely
reach 1-2 from my house so I got a hotspot and it worked very well. It took
me a little while to get it figured out, the registration on d-star
servers, etc. But once setup it worked fantastic. At some point I got bored with it and got a little tired of the poor battery life, sold it.
Now Im thinking about giving DMR a try. Looks like there are a few
repeaters in my general area but a hotspot might still be the way to go?
How would you describe the pros and cons of DMR compared to d-star? Ive
done a little reading and watched a few videos but wonder what peoples
    thoughts were here.
One big difference, looks like DMR hardware is cheaper and has more options? Thanks!
p.s. I did read through a faq or two here :)

I recently bought a 706mkiig not knowing it was the Japanese allocation (I realized when I couldn’t transmit over 433), I thought I could do the Mars/cap mod but that didn’t work at all, apparently the Japanese model has some other mod or maybe it’s just hard-coded into the radio not to transmit at the US 440 repeaters? Anyone know anything about the Japanese models and
how I could turn it into something I could use in the US? submitted by /u/ManneredTundra3

    stick antennas

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 08:28 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/so4jng/stick_antennas/

    Hello,
Im not a ham, I know nothing about antenna design, but as a tinkerer I have some projects that use radio and antennas. I was wondering how to visualize
how waves are picked up in a typical quarter wave stick or wire antenna.
I understand that a quarter wavelength from a node youll have an antinode.
Does the tip of the antenna then form a virtual ground, with a node there
and the antinode at the base of the antenna?
If this is true, why do nodes and antinode form that way? Is it because
this type of antenna is in effect half of a capacitor and the charges pile
    up at the tip?

    Max RF Input Signal

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 02:19 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/snwlhj/max_rf_input_signal/

Does anyone have a sense of what a maximum input signal to an HF radio can
be before it would cause damage to the receive chain? I just had a look at
the RF receive specs for my FT-450D. It does give sensitivity but no max signal.

    https://preview.redd.it/t361luaioog81.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=73f7eeae1278bc137f9b31d13a11d8aab512c766
A lot of RF equipment I see including sensitive Spectrum Analyzers Ive used
in my job will list a max input of +10dBm or so. So that would what I would
be thinking would be the ballpark for an HF radio. To put that in
perspective I did a quick S-Meter to dBm calculation and that works out to s9+83dB or about 706mV across a 50ohm load.

$400 -- What would you buy?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 07:49 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/so3sjl/400_what_would_you_buy/

If you had $400 and was all you could spend on any Amateur Radio gear in
the next year (so it would have to all be useful once the money was spent), what would you buy?
I have been involved in Amateur radio for a while, but I have been limited
in hardware, budget, and space. At the moment, I can spend $400. I have an
old Icom HT, and I have a 2 meter Icom mobile radio (that has a flaw that
does not prevent use, but is irritating) connected to a 2m/70cm
base-station antenna. (I do have a desktop power supply to power the mobile radio as well.)
Note that if it is a mobile radio for mobile use (which I currently do not have) or a base station radio, I would need the radio and antenna.
I have my General license, so dipping my toes into HF would be possible. I
just am not sure how far I can stretch $400 in HF if I need to get an
antenna (and antenna cable) as well.
(I know I could by used, but in this case, I would prefer to go with new
(or maybe refurbished) due to how I have this money currently available.)
If you do not have a good opinion given my requirements, I would also be interested in what people would by if they could spend $400 for their own setup. $400 is an interesting price point I think, since it is more
than "cheap" but nowhere near enough for "expensive".
Last, I will give a "Helpful" award to the first person who can figure out
how many Baofengs you can buy for $400, excluding UV-5R models (or related versions of clones).
Thanks, and 73. submitted by /u/hsvsunshyn

EFHW on same mast as a vertical antenna?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 07:32 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/so3fwl/efhw_on_same_mast_as_a_vertical_antenna/

Just got a 8010 EFHW to test out against my multiband vertical that’s
mounted on a 30’ fiberglass mast. My plan is to use the same mast that’s holding my vertical to hold up one length of the EFHW so I can run it in an inverted L, with the mast holding the part of the end fed that runs perpendicular to the ground. I think having both antennas would allow me to switch between either the end fed or the vertical depending on the band or
the conditions, since the vertical covers more bands. Of course, though,
this would mean that a length of coax is right next to the end fed antenna wire, since it would be the coax leading to the vertical mounted on top,
and also the wire antenna would run below the vertical antenna. Is anybody running a similar setup? Do you think this arrangement would affect how the
two antennas operate? I think if anything having the end fed on the same
mast it would act like a type of counterpoise for the vertical, but I’m not sure… submitted by /u/Mean-Difference-197

    We bought an enclosed trailer

    Posted: 08 Feb 2022 05:38 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/snkgg2/we_bought_an_enclosed_trailer/

As reported earlier, we got carried away and bought a lot of 30 6 KW diesel retired construction light towers and converted these for communications purposes. We signed an MOU with Minnesota VOAD and MNARES and were reminded that not all disasters happen on warm, sunny summer afternoons. We in fact
got an email heads-up about a series of unusual winter tornados not long
    ago.
The idea of deploying and needing to operate for several days reminded us
of ARRL Field Day. But Field Day has three unusual features- it is planned,
is in summer and has an extensive supply infrastructure.
Tents are ok to keep off bugs and rain. But after five days outdoors in ice fishing tents at the Loppet ski events in 2021, we decided we needed an upgrade. A 15 camping trailer was tried. It was comfortable. But was big, heavy, hard to store and used a lot of fuel being towed. Many features did
not work in winter. Winterization was a chore. And I worried constantly
about the aging rubber roof. A friend just told us the slide-out jammed on
his motorhome- a $12,000 repair. We did not need to house a family on
vacation. Any trailer needed to fit in my driveway and be towable by
sno-cat, or normal sized, non V8 vehicles.
The camper was sold and the hot market for enclosed cargo trailers was explored. N0NAS was arguing for larger, but I was set on the smallest
possible. Currently, we did not need a lot of operating positions indoors.
Five by eight seemed good, but I needed a side door, and a pointed nose for reduced drag and bit more storage. About six inches of extra inside height
was critical. A new, custom made one was $4000 with surcharges - a bit
pricey. A used one was found- dirty and rusty at auction. It housed a
    diesel saltwater pressure washer.
It had a handy nine-inch hole in the roof which was enlarged for an RV
plastic hatch for light and air. A three inch hole was plugged and has
a "N" bulkhead connector for mesh antennas. A counter was put in the nose
and Group 31 battery, shore power and marine battery charger were added. I added an extra shelf for a microwave. This was a nice camper feature. Doug found a Harbor Freight flagpole which made a serviceable 20 mast.
We tested it at several Hams in the Park events. And at the two-day Loppet Winter Festival. It was our video uplink center. The one thing- we need two
of these. We had two events last Saturday. I might try to find a tiny
awning. The idea is this trailer deploys with a pair of the 30 diesel tower trailers. In active/standby that is 120 hours of fuel in the MNVOAD Headquarters role/tasking. In the great indoor propane heater debate I am voting for electric heat. https://preview.redd.it/fcem4jxg4mg81.jpg?width=256&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=959a8bc1eea4cc6946d0ae676ad65f3ca306f380
