With recent conditions, 20 meters may not need to be the slugfest it
sometimes can be in this domestic contest, as stations will be able to
spread out. Remember, you can work a station once per contest.

For a bit of a warm-up, give the JIDX SSB phone contest
<http://jidx.org/> a try -- the exchange is your RST and CQ zone. The
only contacts that count for points are between JA and non-JA
operators. If you're going to try for the highest points-per-Q band,
make sure you're aware of the JA 160-meter phone bands.

News, Press Releases, and Special Interest

Users of the VE7CC packet cluster noticed that on Saturday they were temporarily being connected to AE5E's packet cluster instead. British
Columbia and the Pacific Northwest experienced a wind storm that
disrupted commercial power over a wide swath, and VE7CC.CC was one of
the casualties. The VE7CC server's DNS fails over to AE5E's node. Ron
Stordahl, AE5E, noted in an email on Saturday that at one point, over
1,700 users were connected to his node. After 19 hours, VE7CC's power
returned. New connections are once again being served by VE7CC.CC.

Bruce Draper, AA5B, recently passed away. Bruce was a past editor of
NCJ, as well as a past editor of the Convention and Hamfest Calendar in
QST. Ray Sokola, K9RS, noted, "Over the years, Bruce distinguished
himself as both a single operator and multi-op contester. I was
privileged to be part of many multi-op teams with him and appreciate
those memories. He was a great teammate, and I will miss him."

QO-100 is an amateur satellite in geosynchronous orbit over Africa. Its footprint doesn't include North America...or does it? A recent AMSAT-UK
article <https://amsat-uk.org/2022/11/01/making-qo-100-contacts-from-north-america-a-new-challenge/>
speculates that it may be possible for a station on Signal Hill in St.
John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, to successfully communicate
through it. To spur attempts, AMSAT-UK and the British Amateur
Television Club (BATC) are sponsoring the QO-100 Challenge for North
America, with trophies awarded to the first station that:

- Completes the first two-way contact via the QO-100 narrow-band
transponder when operating from Newfoundland
- Completes more than 100 two-way contacts via the QO-100 narrow-band transponder when operating from Newfoundland
- Completes the first two-way DATV contacts via the QO-100 wide-band transponder when operating from Newfoundland

Subsequent operations from Newfoundland will also be eligible to apply
for a special certificate, according to the article.

Rob Fanfant, N7QT, currently on a DXpedition in Palau (T8), points out:
"When using FT8 to call a station in Fox/Hound mode, make sure you're
picking a transmit tone that's at least 1100 Hz. In Fox/Hound mode, the
Fox will only respond to stations above 1000 Hz. If you call too close
to 1000 Hz using radios that are slightly off, the Fox may not hear
you."

The third annual TRX Tower Rodeo Challenge <https://trxchallenge.com/>
on December 2 - 3, 2022, features seven two-person crews assembled from different sectors of the professional tower-climbing industry,
including communications workers, utility workers, and first
responders. The competition includes challenges that go beyond mere
towers. This year there will be situations involving rooftops and
building edges, mobile elevated platforms, and sponsor-promised
surprises. Spectator interest has grown with each event, so this year
the competition will be live-streamed on YouTube. Last year's

Word to the Wise

Cut Number -- Letter abbreviations for Morse numerals, such as N for 9
A for 1, T for zero, and so forth.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS

Michael Walker, VA3MW, opining on 10 meters when it's open: "If you
haven't ever been through a solar cycle peak, you are going to be in
for a nice ride. You can work the world on 10 W and a dipole. Even
today signals are over S9. These are not the days for FT8. These are
the days to drag out the microphone. You can even cut down an old CB
beam and work anyone QRP. Get on and make some noise!"

Operating Tip

Copy and Log What is Sent

This topic is a perennial: Modern logging programs do a great job of
providing copying aids in the form of check databases and call history
files. When a call sign is typed into an entry window, a look up
against a side database is performed by the logging program, and
information about that call sign is displayed, which can include
location, exchange, and so on. Some logging programs will even pre-fill
the appropriate form fields in the entry window before the other
station has sent it. It's vital to log what is sent by the other
station, not the pre-filled information. It's OK to ask the other
station for a repeat, but always remember that the sent information has precedence over the pre-fill.

TECHNICAL TOPICS AND DISCUSSION

Practice! Practice! Practice! That's how you can improve your CW
skills, and using MorseRunner as a training aid is one way to do it
between contests. If you like to tinker, MorseRunner source code is
available with MorseRunner Community Edition <https://github.com/w7sst/MorseRunner>, and the project is seeking
quality contributions pertaining to improving the end-user experience,
bug fixes, support for alternate operating systems, and integration
with popular logging programs.

Prosistel Rotator users may find Eugenio Morales', EA7HG, Visual Rotor
project <https://ea7hg.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9:visual-rotor-vr&catid=8&Itemid=140&lang=en>
of interest. According to the website, it uses an Arduino Mega 2560, a
4.3-inch touchscreen, and various board-level modules to enable control
of the rotator via the screen, serial/USB, or even via Android device.

Older radios can be a lot of fun to restore, align, and get on the air.
Using them for DXing or contesting can sometimes be difficult, however,
because modern features like CAT control, frequency memories, or even
second VFOs can be lacking. The UDVBM-1 project <https://www.tindie.com/products/mostlydiyrf/udvbm-1-universal-digital-vfo-bfo-motherboard/>,
a Universal Digital VFO and BFO Motherboard, was born of the creator's
need "to replace the drifty VFO in one of my rigs with a digital
solution." Combine the ever-popular Si5351 PLL with an Arduino Nano,
Arduino Pro Mini, or Seeed Studio's XIAO MCU (ESP32-based). Appropriate
source code is available in a GitHub repository <https://github.com/mostlydiyrf>.

Tree rings may contain historical records of past cosmic events <https://phys.org/news/2022-10-tree-insight-devastating-storms.html>.
Research done by the University of Queensland indicates that "huge"
radiation storms affecting Earth may have left evidence in the form of carbon-14, which is filtered through trees, among other things. Trees
from thousands of years ago are available for study, and they seem to
show that Miyake events "have occurred approximately once every
thousand years." The researchers also find that these events are not
correlated with sunspot activity.

John Fallows, VE6EY, has blogged about a NanoVNA Current Choke Test Rig

to test common-mode chokes using this or similar setups.

CONVERSATION

Getting Ready for Next Year

After any major contest, there's usually a flurry of posts on

support groups for various radios or logging software packages. Whether
it's participants still excited about a great contest experience, those
that worked through an issue, or those that still need to work through
some issues, there can be a lot of information to go through. It's
great material to read for the next contest.

been a discussion about how to make CW Sweepstakes messages have
slightly longer spacing
