Last october I got the excellent Nikon AF-S D ED IF 28-70 F2.8 for 1000
euros with credit, brand new. NOS. In a January hike of the alpine
club, it started having difficulties focusing, making also a hissing
noise. I immediately send it to Nikon service, which promptly repled
that they couldn't do anything because even in Tokyo there weren't any
spare parts to have! Then I sent it to another Nikon service, which
replied that possibly the motor had seized, and even if there were any
spare parts, it would have to be sent to Germany, for a new motor, with
an estimate of 1000 euros! And then my vendor told me not to worry
because we could send it to an independent service. I was very sceptic
knowing how complex an AF lens is, with a CPU and everything. But after
4-5 months I saw the lens case with the lens hanging in his shop, and he
told me it is OK!! For 150 euros plus 15 for postage! I now am owing him
200 something euros for the lens, my (NOS) Nikon F 70 cost 150 euros but
it does its job well, giving me good negatives to print. I still have to
learn to hold steady this (very heavy) lens.
