• America needs to expand its nuclear arsenal

Don't be fooled by hand-wringing Marxists like who wrote this article. The U.S. and Russia are moving out of M.A.D. territory, the ability to destroy each other. That is highly dangerous. That's what cause (the uncertainty of war) caused world wars.
The U.S. needs to go back to two things:
    1. Larger inventories of weapons, about 10,000 warheads.
    2. Larger nuclear warheads.
There is no threat from a logical point of view of a 5kT warhead. That's for wiping out troops in a battle, or columns of tanks. City-killing weapons are what makes M.A.D. feasible and major war impossible. You watch; if the Ukrainians stupidly move
tanks en masse into battle, instead of broken up, Russia could well-use a tactical nuke of under 10kT to wipe them out in one shot, rather than risk a $100M worth of field artillery and hundreds of men to fight them equally.
Mutually Assured Destruction is only possible when you have enough nuclear fire-power to destroy the enemy. 3000 depowered nukes is not going to cut it.
At the height of the last Cold War, when real war was unthinkable, the U.S. had 20,000 nukes, many of them in the 1MT or larger size range.
