This is a snapshot of Startrek The Next Generation, Season 6,
Episode 26.
It appears to have two planes of focus, one centred on the right
eye of the man in the foreground, and one on the right side of the
chest of the man in the background. Two cameras with superimposing?
Or some effect put in afterwards?
A. In photography/filmography/videorgraphy etc in the past they had
lens that would "focus infinity" and this would allow
for the entire foreground and background to be in focus. However it is
limited and was great for film and television before digital because
you barely could see the artifacts. In a digital camera ( like your
phone ) you often could "focus infinity" when you focus on
the object most far away in your camera lens. However as mentioned you
would still see partial blurring.
B. In "STNG" they had the usage of the Blue-screen ( now
often green-screen ). The blue screen you have an area that is blue
and everything else could appear as is. So they could have shot the
same footage at the same time using two different cameras just to
craft that scene or whatever it was. Clearly looking at the left of
his head you see the same shapes and features but blurring, around the
edge of his neck, which could mean the blue-screen was being used as
with many News-reporters and their mini-screens overlays. Think the
Blue-screen could have whatever inside of it being shown whenever they
want to turn it on or off. Similar to a two-way mirror inside an
interrogation room, exercise hall, or testing clinic.
