  • Most obscure computer problem I've seen

    Two identical 500GB Samsung 850 SSDs. Media server could read from what, but could not see files on the other. I did everything, including unformating, formatting in different modes, deleting and re-installing partitions. Nothing. Turns out, the older
    media server could not read from a GTP drive. It had to be MBR. Converting in the command prompt in windows is easy, about a four line affair. After that, no problems.

    Thanks for posting that. I may have encountered a similar error when upgrading from a 500 GB 2.5" SSD to a 1 TB M.2 stick. My backup software produced an unbootable disk, but the supplied Samsung transfer software handled it correctly, though.

    Rich, have you tried updating the SSD firmware via Samsung's Magician software? Might be worthwhile for the older one? I don't know what the situation is for the 850s, but my 3 x 1TB 980s have all been firmware-updated recently with no adverse outcomes.

    Yes, they were up-to-date but the server was older.
