• Canon joins the "subscription software" brigade

From RichA@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 10 07:25:29 2022
There is even software now to hunt down all the subscriptions people have so they don't end up with paying for ones they no longer use.

    The software here:

    https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/

is purchase, not subscription. I was delighted to find that the licence (for hobbyists) includes Mac, PC and iPad versions, and another family member can use with no extra payment. It seems that Serif, Affinity really know what people want! Photo, Designer and Publisher for about $100.

Indeed, refreshing, I've got Photo v.1. Is the upgrade to v2 worthwhile?

    I don't know, Rob.
I upgraded, in part, to support their licence policy.

Only if you choose to upgrade do you need to pay more.

If the existing software works for you, there is NO continuing cost.

Well, but then you can't use the new features. There is quite some
progress at the moment in the area of computational image processing.

There was a lot of noise for instance about the latest DXO software,
with people claiming substantial improvements in high ISO noise reduction.

Although you could skip one of the yearly upgrades and only upgrade
    every second year for instance.

These aren't yearly upgrades. My first Affinity Photo was 2018, and there were updates after that. So it was a four year cycle. At ~€100 for the three programs that's about €35 per year, rather less than Adobe's offering.

I'm finding that the computation photography which I get in the camera saves a lot of post-processing effort later, which saves time and suits my way of working. Indeed, there is indeed a lot of improvement!

Let's get it correct. One-off purchase in 2018, no further money spent until an optional major upgrade in 2022. Free updates from 2018, a few anyway. So for €100, four years of support, so about €25 annually if you want to look at
it that way to compare with a subscription. But, again, it's a once-off purchase.
