Archie Shepp covered the song back in 1985, at a Bar and Grill
located in Sacramento, along with Coltrane and Dizzy numbers. SJI
was composed by Joe Primrose, as far as I know. That's what the CD
reads.
I agree with the Penguin Jazz guide, although only very lightly:
that it seems a bit scholastic or a lecture by Shepp...although I
enjoy the CD very much. It's great, IMO.
