A great work, which inspired many later works by Bartok, Orff etc. In terms of ballet there's not much better then Nijinska's original choreography, which is wonderful.

In terms of musical performances, one version stands out - the close-mic'd Pokrovsky Ensemble. Very Russian vocals. Love it or hate it, it's compelling. Here's the first tableau, but it's all on YT. Tempo is a consistent 120bpm.

Bernstein is slower at 110bpm, too slow for me. Stravinsky himself is also around 110bpm in 1934 and a touch slower in the later version. I don't rate the Bernstein, but Stravinsky is a reference.

Review of versions by Dave Hurwitz. Quite useful - he likes Reuss which is good and clean but a trifle bland, but his reference is Ancerl. Ancerl is good, a little slower at 117bpm but pretty authentic.

There was an Royal Ballet performance which I enjoyed, they made a DVD with an interview with Bronislava Nijinska and some of the dancers. Worth seeking out.

Ancerl for me, (he is generally always very very crisp), although Craft is very good. I can't remember Stravinsky's recording in the big Stravinsky box.
