Definitely one of the finer readings.

IMHO the must hear DDs are:

    Gieseking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUJhHttK_dM
    and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ry4fQAGGos

    Thierry de Brunhoff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlx5jME78tE

    Dino Ciani: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-kK43bBlA0

    Radu Lupu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc98YOw2Sk0

    Delphine Lizé: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM5QfieLPJ4

Why so many? DD is a kaleidoscopic work that allows almost
infinitely many different takes, more so than any other of the
Schumann cycles. If I had to pick just one it would be
Fabienne Jacquinot's 1988 recording linked to above.

By the way I've not really listened to the Elisso with the attention it probably deserves, but I can say this: I enjoyed the way she plays the more dreamy dances.

I love Benno, have all his remastered recordings, but his Schumann is often too cumbersome for my taste. Cortot, in all its apparent simplicity, is a delight to listen to. Yet I miss something Jacquinot does have to offer, though I can't put my finger on
    what it is.

    No longer competitive, either
    technically, accoustically, or
    musically.

If I were only allowed to keep
    one, it would be Jacquinot.
    Two? Add Ugorsky. Three?
    Add Lizé.

damn lucky to have me :-)))
but seriously, there is nothing about the recording that is outstanding and for me, the sound of the piano (actually, all instruments), is so important. that is why I so admire ABM. Gould was also demanding about pefectly tuned pianos.........

I love the interpretation. It deserved a better-sounding piano and better engineering. Nevertheless, I'm lucky we have it. ABM, Gould, and Zimerman could/can afford to be picky - I don't know if Jacquinot could.

It's a long time ago I saw DBT in the theatre, however, the two female solos are absolutely stunning in ideas and execution:
    Suzanne Farrell: 23:25
    Karin von Aroldingen: 27:29

And Karin Von Aroldingen again with Adam Luders at around 31:25. The dance by Adam Luders just before that is wonderfully staged, with those shadowy figures.

It makes me think of something in Bergman, but I'm not sure what -- something in Fanny and Alexander I think, a shadow play. It's a long long time since I last watched anything by Bergman!

    Just found it.
Definitely one of the finer readings.

IMHO the must hear DDs are:

    Gieseking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUJhHttK_dM
    and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ry4fQAGGos

    Thierry de Brunhoff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlx5jME78tE

    Dino Ciani: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-kK43bBlA0

    Geza Anda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbvOhzLlWac

    Fabienne Jacquinot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoPP7h6pQnE

    Anatol Ugorsky: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kAuURlyVzTkzayGnHJSUCcLMvQuqrefvU

    Catherine Collard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qfEyYFdenM

    Radu Lupu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc98YOw2Sk0

    Delphine Lizé: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM5QfieLPJ4

Why so many? DD is a kaleidoscopic work that allows almost
infinitely many different takes, more so than any other of the
Schumann cycles. If I had to pick just one it would be
Fabienne Jacquinot's 1988 recording linked to above.

Delphine Lizé is sensitive and creative and original. Such poetry! Much appreciated.
But somehow it's hard for me to stay with it to the end. Maybe there's not enough relief, enough variety. But still, glad to have discovered it.

but seriously, there is nothing about the recording that is outstanding and for me, the sound of the piano (actually, all instruments), is so important. that is why I so admire ABM. Gould was also demanding about pefectly tuned pianos.........
I love the interpretation. It deserved a better-sounding piano and better engineering. Nevertheless, I'm lucky we have it. ABM, Gould, and Zimerman could/can afford to be picky - I don't know if Jacquinot could.

yes, that is a problem for less well known pianists but at times even Rubenstein recorded on bad pianos.......

It's known that not all pianists care. As an abbé in Rome, Liszt didn't even try to get a decent piano. Rubinstein may have been too much a man of the world to be troubled by details.
